R.E.M. – Sweetness Follows Lyrics 6 years ago
just my opinion- death IS the sweetness.

life is suffering, but it comes to an end. it doesn't need to be any deeper than that. just like in real life, you can put religious significance to it if you want, but really it's just a thought about mortality.

the song definitely sounds like i feel on the day of a funeral.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Mayonaise Lyrics 6 years ago
Corgan said these were just nonsense lyrics, but he inadvertently wrote a poem. the man is an artist.
the song captures a feeling, not a narrative.
personally, i hear the anguish of being emotionally unfit to deal with what's on your plate. the song carries the tone of a long goodbye, and conveys regret.
we have all had our long nights of introspection and felt the aching need to break free from the lives we built for ourselves. we ramble on about all we could have been, all we want to accomplish, and all the things we wish we were saying, but "words defile the plans", and we are cursed to have ever felt those feelings.
in the end, we just tell ourselves that "when i can, i will" bc after all, we gotta go to work tomorrow -the fry guy has been eyeing my grill for a couple weeks and if i'm late again they're gonna give him my job

stripper song
in the 80s, before they did acrobatics on the pole, they just kinda slowly danced like a twisting flame
come on little honey, shake it!

The Cult – She Sells Sanctuary Lyrics 6 years ago
when they're looking at you, or you feel like they are. when they're looking at her and it makes you angry for a second, when you work so hard your back burns and the world drags you down, you see that sparkle in her eye and it keeps you going
only i made it sound dumb

Christopher Cross – Best That You Can Do (Arthur's Theme) Lyrics 7 years ago
there's no question about it. this is a song written exactly for the movie. it's in the title and the lyrics.
aurthur is a billionaire lush who falls in love with someone his family doesnt approve of. it's a good movie, if a little dated.

this song is so catchy. cross was incredible. he would NEVER make it in the industry now. he'd be writing and producing for the next 15yo pop star. our loss, guys. not only pretty ppl make good music. go listen to "ride like the wind"

Foo Fighters – Learn to Fly Lyrics 8 years ago
"think i need a devil to help me get things right"

our addictions are commonly referred to as "devils" and demons

i think it's written from the perspective of an addict who is "tired of trying", "done nursing patience", willing to give it all away for "one last try". he sat around laughing, his high is gone now, and he needs someone to "hook (him) up a new (one)"

he's not even kidding himself anymore. he's not looking for salvation- he's looking for "complication". he knows what he seeks will only lead to more misery in the long run. he actually wants to live "happily ever trapped" in his addiction, his home, where he feels safe... because he's flying, man.

don't let the silly videos fool you, kids. the foo fighters are a rock band.

The Cult – Fire Woman Lyrics 8 years ago
what a great tune!

pretty sure this party jam is a STRIPPER SONG.

this was before they started doing acrobatics in adult clubs. the lazy, curvy, dance of a 80's lady on a pole "twisting like a flame in a slow dance, baby- driving me crazy, cmon little honey, shake it"

what else could that mean?

then the scat at the end... i hear:
"burn it out, shake it baby, gotta have that money.
stand in front of me, said, stand in fronta me yeah"

that's the only thoughts this song ever conjured- yay me!

Tove Lo – Habits (Stay High) Lyrics 9 years ago
I appreciate this song as a lyrical poem. There can be no hidden meaning. The subject is in a self-destructive spiral bc of the hurt she feels.

What bothers me is that it made it to the radio. I don't think the general public can handle a song that could be interpreted as a drug anthem.
This is painfully obvious, bc of the instant onslaught of remixes, most of them to dance music, many of which omit every lyric besides "i gotta stay high".
As someone with kids, I am appalled that this song made it to the mainstream. Imagine a 6-year-old singing in the the back seat, "i gotta stay high, all the time."
Thanks, pop culture, for introducing drug abuse to my son as an alternative coping mechanism. smh

Randy Newman – Short People Lyrics 9 years ago
This song makes me smile til my face hurts.
It is so ridiculous that it INSTANTLY reveals itself to be a joke.
Anyone that is offended by the song is terribly misled, and most likely someone who agrees with what the song really means:
IT'S FRIGGIN CRAZY TO JUDGE PEOPLE BASED ON APPEARANCE.

I'm not short, but i have, of course, been hurt before by unreasonable bias. BIg hug to everybody that thinks mean people suck.

Amy Winehouse – Rehab Lyrics 10 years ago
2 theories:
1-She (the character singing the song- Amy's former self) is upset about the institution and everyone telling her the "typical" things you hear: "you're an alcoholic, you need help, you're depressed, you're in denial". She knows for a FACT that all these things are true, but isn't ready to deal with it.
Anyone who's been there knows that these are the things you hear, that they sound so "typical" that you roll your eyes. Alcoholism gives you this illusion of being smarter and having more control than you do.
I like to think that Amy was past this denial stage, and wrote the song with great insight. Sadly, she wasn't in time to save herself. We lost her too soon. A beautiful song.
2-She was writing it from her own current point of view. This makes her pathetic, and I only want to cry for her and those who loved her. It's a drunk reveling in her obliviousness. This song makes me sick.

The reason I think the first theory is more correct is that the song has such a fun and funky sound. The horns and rhythm are the mark of happiness. There is a delightful irony in the self-realization of it. I don't think she'd be able to express herself in this way if she hadn't grown out of the denial phase of the disease.

Bruce Springsteen – Born to Run Lyrics 10 years ago
in pace and tone it embodies bridled angst and youthful fire. he's suffering in mediocrity, chomping at the bit for escape. he's waiting for his life to change in a place where it seems that nothing changes. and then there's Wendy (or Mary in Thunder Road and the River). she yearns to be rescued and she believes in him.
he has the ability to say and play what we feel. he's genius.
a working man who became the Boss, Springsteen IS the american dream!

Hall and Oates – Maneater Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is great, however it's all over the internet with the wrong lyrics.
Listen to the song.
He very clearly says "So many have paid to see..What'd you think- you'd get it for free?"

This song is not only about shallow, gold-digging women, but a PARTICULAR gold-diggin', shallow woman. Rumor has it that this song was written soon after a one-and-done date with 80's model/actress Kelly LeBrock. John Oates has been quoted as saying that she "inspired" the song. I think it's priceless.

He was on a date with a beautiful, status-conscience woman who was into the finer things. She literally watched the door to see and be seen, leaving her date (a rock-star, no less) wondering what he had gotten himself into.

The only thing that's really up for grabs here is whether this song is warning off like-minded, hopeful men, or just Darryl kicking himself for expecting anything other than what he got.
