I do agree with the suicide idea, but in my eyes, it has more to do with depression in general. Let me explain. "There's another world inside of me", "secrets in this life that I can't hide" Both of these seem to be about the actual depression. There are various parts where light is referenced, or, more so, a lack of. His statement that he might be blind indicates that, yes, he is perhaps suicidal. But he still wants to find the light, and he's hoping that he's just blind. The chorus seems to be directed at the person closest to him, likely a lover ("hold me"). He acknowledges that he may not be here much longer ("when I'm gone") and that if he does kill himself, it's "only for your good", that's why he'll "give up everything". But he doesn't seem to really want to kill himself, because he asks of whomever the chorus is directed at to "hold me when I'm scared", being when he is considering suicide. I fully agree that the second verse, primarily "when your education x-ray cannot see under my skin" is about a therapist of some sort. Statistically, most people who are suffering with depression will not say anything to anybody, especially not someone they do not trust. He repeats "maybe I'm just blind", seemingly as courage to move forward with his life. This is just what I have interpreted based on my life experiences. |

| This is the perfect song to say, I've moved on. I loved you, so much, but I don't any longer. And I was so mad at you, but I'm okay now. Some of the things are probably literal, like the photograph at the bottom of the drawer, but the coffee maker is perhaps less literal, more in that it symbolizes the relationship. It's done. No hope to fix it. Just overall beautiful. | |

| I've heard both Johnny Cash and U2's version of this song, and I personally prefer Johnny Cash's. Don't get me wrong–I love U2. But Johnny Cash just puts more emotion into the song. And the instrumental part in the background just puts a different feeling in it. It makes it so much more relatable. This song probably has the most powerful lyrics I've ever heard in it. To me, Christina Perri is singing from the viewpoint of a guy who has loved a girl for "a thousand years" (obviously an exaggeration). The main lyrics that lead me to this conclusion are "beauty in all she is". Why would a girl be saying that? It feels to me like the song is about a guy trying to gain the courage to confess his love to a girl. "Heart beats fast" when she's around. "How to be brave" he's trying to gain courage to tell her. "How can I love when I'm afraid to fall" he's afraid to be in love with her, he doesn't want to be hurt. "But watching you stand alone / All of my doubt, suddenly goes away somehow / One step closer" he is gaining his courage to tell her. First chorus is him practicing in his head what he should say, trying to find the words of how he feels. "Time stands still / Beauty in all she is" time stops when she's around, she's the most beautiful person he's ever met. "I will be brave / I will not let anything, take away / What's standing in front of me / Every breath, every hour has come to this" he's encouraging himself to tell her how he feels. "One step closer" he's getting closer and closer to admitting it. Second chorus, he finally secures in his mind what he's going to say. He's going to tell her he loves her. "One step closer / one step closer" he's almost there, about to tell her. Last chorus he finally tells her, but it doesn't tell us how she responds. I personally hope he gets her, because he's so sweet and he finally got the nerve to tell her. Explanation of chorus: "I have died everyday, waiting for you" it's painful to not be with her. "Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years / I'll love you for a thousand more" she has been hurt in the past, and he's reassuring her that he won't hurt her because he loves her so much that he can't stop loving her. "And all along I believed, I would find you / Time has brought your heart to me" he's telling her that he has been looking for the right girl his whole life, and he knew the moment he met her, she was the right one. "I have loved you for a thousand years / I'll love you for a thousand more" his final admission of his love for her. This is just the explanation that makes sense to me. Other people have their own interpretations, but I personally like this one. |

My best friend and I have both been suicidal in the past, and fairly recently, she lost one of her other friends to suicide. This song brought her through it. One night, at about 3 in the morning, we were texting each other. It was the one year anniversary of the day her friend died and she was feeling terrible. We made a promise to each other that night that neither of us would commit suicide. I was listening to this song at the time, and we made it a symbol of our promise. Tears were definitely streaming down our faces. To me, the beginning is basically a list. It's a bunch of reasons why life can go to crap. "When you try your best but you don't succeed / When you get what you want but not what you need / When you're so tired but you can't sleep". Then "Stuck in reverse" is implying depression and feeling generally down and suicidal. Then it gets to "When the tears come streaming down your face". This is clear-you are in such a terrible place that you can't hold in the tears anymore. "When you lose something you can't replace". This was my best friend's friend, who committed suicide. That's the line that's hers. "When you love someone but it goes to waste". This one is mine. I've loved the same guy for almost two years now, but he doesn't know it because I won't tell him. I don't want to ruin our friendship, however one-sided it may seem. So my love for him goes to waste, because I get nothing out of it. "Could it be worse?" This is the thought that is running through your head when you are about to grab the gun. "Lights will guide you home / And ignite your bones / And I will try to fix you". The "lights" is the promise that we remind one another of, and it reaches deep into our bones. Then if one of us is down and considering suicide again, the other will do everything in their power to help, or "fix" the one considering suicide. "High above or down below". This is my friend wondering if her friend who committed suicide is in heaven or in hell. "When you're too in love to let it go". This is me with the guy I love too much. "If you never try you'll never know / Just what you're worth". If one of us kept our thoughts to ourself about our worth or the value of our life, then the other would never be able to tell the suicidal one just how valuable they are. "Tears come streaming down your face". Every time this is stated, it is reminding us of a suicidal state. "When you lose something you can't replace". You can't replace a person. You can't replace your love. "I promise you I will learn from all my mistakes". A reminder that the other has also considered suicide, and it is a mistake and nothing more. It is never an option. Then it ends on the chorus, reminding that we are always there for one another. |
