this was a great song, and yes, the man in the long black coat is death. song is about someone who is mourning this girl or woman. dylan's rendition has sorrowful horns, french horns?, accompanying the lyrics. pulse and vibration, rumbling force, someone is out there beating on a dead horse...reveals someone's sorrow and incomprehension on coming to grips with the loss of this woman.... |

it is obvious to me that dylan's "man in the long black coat" is about someone who is grief-stricken over the loss of this woman. death visited her suddenly...like a hurricane comes along suddenly, and it was not anticipated such as would have been the case in a long illness. death took her, and her loved-one is thrashing about in the woods, uncomprehendingly, out there beating on a dead horse. he cannot understand how or why. it could also be the woman committed suicide, as dylan says there was no note, nothing at all. but either way, the grief of this woman's loved-one is palpable. great great song. sad, mournful. but beautiful. |
