Tears for Fears – Head Over Heels Lyrics 7 years ago
I think it's about him realizing that he loves someone in a new way from his past. He loves that person through the memory of their interactions, and through the memory of his feelings. I think the song is a love letter to that person and that he wishes they could try again. Hence, his declaration that "this is his four leaf clover". The song and the lyrics represent an attempt to reconnect with someone from his past.

@[dieforkurt:9304] This is their greatest song because it's the most transcendent. The other songs you mention are great, but they're not as good because they didn't resonate with popular culture the way this one did. You think that doesn't count for anything but it does!

Supertramp – Goodbye Stranger Lyrics 8 years ago
I hate everyone who says this is about one night stands!

"Just the thought of those sweet ladies
Sends a shiver through my veins"

This lyric is odd to me if it is indeed a reference to women. What about a shiver in your veins is sexual?

Now, a slang term for HEROIN is "Sweet Lady H".

Obviously, heroin is injected in your veins.

Makes sense to me that this is a DRUG REFERENCE not a reference to actual ladies.

So, superficially its a song about drugs.

The song title "Goodbye stranger" simply acknowledges the 2 versions of himself that he experiences, the sober version and the addicted version. So when he does drugs he says goodbye to his other self... Or vice versa.

On another level its a story about progressing in life to a different level of thinking.

Many of the lyrics hint at something grander than a simple struggle with an addiction. It may be that the writer draws a parallel between life and death and the struggle with addiction, seeing himself in victory over addiction as a self-savior.

It's possible that the stranger is this self-savior, a projection of himself into the role of Jesus, or even Jesus.

In the end, no matter what we do, we must choose, we must change, we must say goodbye to our child hood, to our lost loved ones, and eventually to life itself.

In the end, Goodbye stranger can mean so many things, but it means only one.

Say goodbye to YOURSELF.

The song meaning is dependent on your state of mind. Like all good songs, the song is ambiguous, thus it can change with you as you change in your life. For many people it will mean many things. In trying to understand the song it's important to remember that there are levels to perception and that everything around us has meaning that is unresolved. This song is part of learning. Songs help us learn because they change with us they show us how to change to walk a higher path.

Good luck!

it is a spiritual song about wanting more for your soul. inside of the recognition that you don't belong is the idea that your soul belongs in a higher place. that sudden realization, "what the hell am i doing here?" is the realization that you are already beyond this place. you will all go to the stars, i promise you that.

"We've come too far to give up who we are
So let's raise the bar and our cups to the stars"

They're aliens genetically manipulating the human race (not really aliens but they want us to think they are), and they're raising the bar (through eugenics) to take humanity to the stars.
