Black Box Recorder – The Deverell Twins Lyrics 8 years ago
In St Bartholomew's Churchyard at Lower Basildon, there is a joint tomb for two sons of Edward and Priscilla Deverell. Both boys drowned together bathing in Thames. The tombstone reads "They were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided."

Probably where the names come from in this song.

Regina Spektor – Mermaid Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this is about how easily we give up what makes us special, like the voice and tail of the little mermaid, for something transient and superficial. And later when we realize our loss we can only remind ourselves of the old days in some pathetic self-pitying way. "We spoonfeed our adorable remorse, like whores or beggars nourishing their lice."

The Auteurs – After Murder Park Lyrics 9 years ago
This title track is a sequel to another song in the same album, Unsolved Child Murder. In Unsolved Child Murder, the child went missing but the body was never found. In this sequel someone with psychic powers sensed the dead child's spirits, contacted the police and the child's parents. The parents were finally able to communicate with the dead child through the medium and express their lamentation.

In some sense this is a rather optimistic ending for a murder story, as the parents fantasized the dead child's spirit to be fortune-telling and talked about the uncle the child never met in his/her lifetime. This is so lively and sincere, and somewhat hilarious.

This song again consists of mixed perspectives including that of the medium, the dead child's spirit, and the parents.

The Auteurs – Unsolved Child Murder Lyrics 9 years ago
The perspective is constantly shifting in this song, which could be a Luke Haines "thing", as he does this quite frequently (e.g. Kidnapping the Heiress). The parents of the missing child, the perpetrator, the child as when he/she was alive, the media coverage, all whose voices are packed in this two-minute song. I find the last verse very powerful ("when we find him/we can cure him/we can make him better/raise him from the dead"). After Murder Park and Suburban Morning are two sequels of this song (or is this their prequel?) which offer two different endings to this story.

much agreed. I think sad and yet optimistic songs are the songs that are truly powerful . Black Box Recorder is another band that makes sad songs that give me strength when I'm down

Regina Spektor – Us Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is in the (500) Days of Summer, which is "probably" a film about "a boy and a girl". So naturally it comes to me that this is a love song. "They made a statue of us". Maybe it's talking about a famous couple. The most famous couple I can think of is Adam & Eve. And this matches the following "they say it's all our fault". I mean, we're not really mad at Adam & Eve for the original sin, but you can say it's their fault. Plus, "den of thieves" is a quote from the Bible. Regina always quotes from the Bible.

But the rest just don't match.

So trying to think out of the box, I watched the MV of this song. The answer is lying there. There are multiple scenes that look Russian in the video, so this song must be about Lenin and Stalin. And the cities named after them are Leningrad and Stalingrad. They say (and we all say, don't we) it's all their fault about all the communism and massacre and stuff. Lenin is famous for his scarf, and I've seen pictures of Stalin with a scarf, too.

I'm not too familiar with Russian politics so this is all I got.

Regina Spektor – Laughing With Lyrics 10 years ago
"No one laughs at God. We're laughing with God". This reminds me of Bokonon in Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut. Bokonon is the founder of Bokononism, which is a religon in the book. And when asked about his own opinion about his own teachings, he said they're all lies. Fomas.
I think Regina's trying to tell us that the absurd and ridiculous aspects of Christianity(and of all religions) which make atheists laugh also make God himself laugh. We're no more shrewd in spotting the flaws in religions than God.

Nancy Sinatra – Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) Lyrics 10 years ago
If you think Kill Bill is about martial arts then I'm afraid you're worse than wrong. If QT had intended the violent scenes to look realistic, he would not have let the blood spurt like a fountain. Blood oozing from deep wounds is terrifying, but crimson-colored fountain is not(it's hilarious if you ask me).
