This song speaks to just about every young couple from not so well-to-do families. When my husband and I married, we were very young. Life was a lot harder than we thought it was going to be and sometimes it was a struggle just make it week to week. The couple in this song are in bad straights, with Tommy unable to earn his pay because of his union being on strike and having to try and live on Gina's waitress's wages and tips. Things look bad and it doesn't seem like they'll be able to make it. But Tommy swears that if all they have is their love, then that's all they need to make it through the bad times. |

To me, this song is talking about a victim of domestic or child abuse. The singer is trying to all he can to survive the hell he's going through, trying to make sure the abuser can't catch him and break him. He is doing the best he can, holding strong, while the situation is getting worse. He knows the situation is getting worse, the night getting darker and darker. All he can do is wait for the dawn, maybe his escape from the abusive situation or maybe he'll be an adult soon and can leave. Stood up strong in spite of that hate Night gets darkest right before dawn What don't kill you makes you more strong And I been waiting for it so long It's in the chorus that he realize that no matter how strong he is, he'll never live through the abuse he's forced to endure. There will be no dawn for him, only a trip into eternal darkness. His abusers have made their bed, now it's their turn to lie in it. He decides that that is what he'll do. If he's to die, he'll take his abusers with him. So I think it changes in the next verses. I swear this song makes me think of a character in a book series I love. This character named Dirk Pitt is invited by a very important Rich Man to a party he is hosting because Pitt saved his life. The Rich Man doesn't think he'll come because as far as he knows, Pitt is low-cultured riff-raff who would know better than come to a black tie affair. Little does he know that Pitt is very well regarded in the US government, his father is an important senator, he is very well know and is an honest-to-goodness adventurer and hero. When Pitt shows up in his tux, the Rich Man is very cruel and dismissive, trying to make Pitt leave. Dirk has had enough, gives a cryptic remark and leaves. The Rich Guy is happy until his guests wonder why THE Dirk Pitt left. Did Rich Guy know he was the one who had raised the wreck of the Titanic a few years ago? And found the Library of Alexandria? And the son of the Senator the Rich Guy was trying to woo? Rich guy goes white. While Pitt did dress up, the Rich Guy treated him like he had worn dirty smelly clothes and boots. |

He doesn't do anything because he's scared for his own life and so just let's the abductors kill the victim who's only wrong doing is being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Later the body washes up on the shores of the river and a friend tells the singer not to go down there. He does anyway and recognizes the innocent victim that was murdered in front of him. He wants to do the right thing and turn the killers in but he knows that the murderers have killed once and killing him wouldn't bother them in the slightest.
