That's a pretty profound point that I hadn't thought about before. The oaks and maples might well be viewed as political parties, whose views often polarize and become extreme mockeries of their once noble intentions, whose debates become increasingly heated and uncivil as neither side is willing to yield or help those on the other side...

It also speaks wonders as to the folly of trying to legislate income equality. The oaks were all cut to the height of the maples, causing them harm. But then, not all maples are the same height either? Since they must be "kept equal", the tallest maples must now be cut so as to not oppress the smallest.
And then a sapling sprouts, not taller than the lowest branch of all the others... |
