I always heard 'ante up with your eyes' but the more I listen to it I think it is 'ante up with your ass'. I think I like 'ass' better in this context anyway.

@[DEVILDOG:6446] I realize this is an extremely old post but just a few things - I never dug too deep into Cobain's death in the past. However, I recently watched "Soaked in Bleach", the Docu-Movie made by Tom Grant. I have to admit there is a lot of compelling information in the film including audio he took from conversations with Courtney and her manager(? or maybe her lawyer i forget), the location of the expelled cartridge, the fact that they were in the midst of divorce and they had a prenup which she was fighting, the extremely high levels of diamorphine, etc. Its made me look at the whole thing differently.

That said, I think you're a little trigger happy calling people ignorant and idiots. The fact of the matter is, despite all the information floating around out there, the only people that know for sure if Kurt killed himself or otherwise are Courtney and whoever she may have conspired with. You don't know and I don't know for sure, so calling people names for not agreeing with you is a bit out of line.

BTW, that's just my opinion.

@[xBrY89x:1806] Any piece of art is going to be subject to the scrutiny of the individual. No piece of art is going to be liked by everyone, and that doesn't speak at all to the individual's mental capacity or ability to appreciate it, its just a matter of taste. Tool is not for everyone. Neither is anything else.

The song 'Real Thing' is about cocaine not heroin. Even the name of the tune is taken from Coca-Cola's (Coke's) slogan at the time. Goin down the steps on a white line...

Alice in Chains – Brush Away Lyrics 10 years ago
This song seems like it has a few different thoughts involved but to me it seems the main theme is his dissatisfaction with being in the band and keeping up with the schedule set by Jerry or the record company or whoever while trying to make a record. Several of the songs on the Tripod album sort of reflect that.

"I could use some time to curl away" Sounds like he's tired of the whole thing.

"My aggression is where you stake your claim" The fact that Layne gets angry with the rest of the band is fuel for the rest of them to talk shit maybe?

"Why I question this curve on which you grade" I think maybe this is a jab at Jerry. The curve on which you grade could be a metaphor for Jerry's assuming leadership and steering the band in a certain direction, perhaps one that Layne doesn't agree with, or questions.

"My conception a joke or latest craze?" Sounds like concern on Layne's part as to whether the lyrics he writes and brings to the band will be made fun of or thought to be great.

"I try to get away and yet I stick around." I think he would really like to step away from the band but feels guilty because the rest of the band wants to continue, tour, be in the spotlight, etc. and they need him as their front man.

The second verse sounds to me like some standard interaction between Layne and the rest of the band while making the record. Layne shows up late to practice, makes up some excuses, general not-getting-along with the guys stuff.

I don't know if any of that is right but those are just my thoughts. Awesome song from the greatest band of all time. God bless you Layne and Mike Starr.

- "Why's is have to be this way?"

Alice in Chains – Hate To Feel Lyrics 10 years ago
I enjoyed your interpretation, however I don't think you're giving Layne the credit he deserves on this track. I disagree that he is simply "rhyming whatever is possible." Layne is severely underrated as a poet. His words all have meaning and he has woven them together with precision.

'Plastic Man, Paper Face. Candy Heart, What a Waste.' That line is so full of meaning, not simply words that rhyme. To me it sounds as if he's saying that he feels like a totally different version of himself, a false version if you will. Candy heart, what a waste. Layne has a big heart and a caring personality and it is such a waste to ruin it with drugs. Thats what I get from that.

Only the music to Godsmack was written by Cantrell. Staley wrote its lyrics. If a song tackles heroin addiction you can bet it was written by Staley.
