i think you got it right on, except i don't think she is his girl. there's no anger in the song, which you would expect if he had found his girl cheating on him. there's just longing. |

i think this song has such an effect on people because most of us have been in this situation, on at least one of the sides. there's the narrator - a guy with a close female friend that he wishes was more ( "i'd give my whole life to see it - just you, stood there, only in your underwear." - he wishes it was him she was standing there for) ; there's the girl, who has woken up after a night of sex that she's now regretting ("if you could close your eyes and just remember that this is what you wanted last night. so why is it so hard for you to touch him, for you to go and give yourself to him?" the lyrics "how the hell did you get here - semi-naked in somebody else's room?" imply she may have been drunk the night before, but whether she was or not is a moot point - for whatever reason, she wanted to have sex with him and now regrets it, and the question could just as easily be implying she made a stupid decision - as in, 'how the hell could you have thought this was a good idea?') ; there's even the guy she had sex with who doesn't realize she's regretting it - he thinks they're going to get it on again this morning ("he's coming up the stairs, and in a moment, he'll want to see your underwear." i'm always curious whether she has sex with him again, meaning he comes away from the experience thinking there was no problem, or whether she makes up an excuse or is honest about her feelings.. it could go either way) three sides to the story, and most of us have been at least one of these people. great song - sexy and sad - such longing in Jarvis Cocker's voice.. one of my favourites! |
