Death Cab for Cutie – Fake Frowns Lyrics 1 month ago
I think it’s generally about the court of public opinion — be it talk shows on TV, social media on the internet, etc. It was a bit prescient in that respect because these days, it really is hard to hold people’s interest for very long with “pixels and sound”, so we have to resort to more and more shocking content to grab that fleeting attention.

I get this sense that this might be a bit of a jab at English-speaking groupies and fans. He uses so many German terms that most Americans typically associate with Germany: "Blitzkreig", "bratwurst", "sauerkraut", "Fahrvergnügen", "Reise Reise" (their own album), "Autobahn", and so on.

Being married to someone who is not American, I've learned that women just go apeshit for guys who speak other languages or with an accent. Doesn't matter what they're saying or why, they just think it's charming when people talk differently from them. So basically, he's just spouting off a load of German words that are familiar to most American consumers -- possibly the ONLY things most Americans understand in German.

When it comes to the chorus, it's basically, "Right, I've charmed you by saying German things, you think I'm all exotic and interesting because I'm a rock star and not from America -- can we just fuck now?" I think the line "I can't get laid in Germany" supports this; of course German women don't think he's anything special. But in America, he's likely racking them up because he's in a famous band AND he's German.

Knowing how the band likes to take a dig at American culture from time to time, this seems like the most plausible interpretation to me.
