Pink Floyd – Dogs Lyrics 8 years ago
i like to believe PF were not being so incredibly obvious in their work.
OK there was a book called Animal Farm that came out about 30 years before this album and it was a satire on society with each animal playing the role of a certain social class.
so wouldnt the most obvious, uninspired thing a band could do would be to make a series of songs using the exact same format? it would be so lazy for any band, and here we are talking about the band which wrote DSotM!

So to me, this obvious interpretation is a front. it's for the simple minded to glaze across and feel like they understand. intended for consumption.

what is the deeper meaning? maybe the society is all in our mind and our conflicting rationalizations of how we are to live our lives are the animals, in our heads. but nah, you never hear barking or snorting or bleating as your mind grinds on topics bigger than itself... or do you?

here's my interpretation of YOUR interpretation

this one time i worked in a library and there were all kinds of books, very, very segmented... like fiction (stories that are made up) and non-fiction (these are more like facts) and then there's the magazine section which is what ugly sad people check out. It's the truth. then, there is the dvd section.

your review is so flawlessly based on the dvd section that it is spooky.

yeah everyone working there looked down at dvds. but i loved it because i saw a dvd where a guy was talking out of his ass. and even if thats not what you were trying to say with your interpretation, you hit it dead solid center.

#WHAM# Outta the park... wake me up before you go-go.

(sorry for the extended sarcasm, but your review sucks and adds nothing to the discussion.)

The Shins – Girl Inform Me Lyrics 10 years ago
"but your lips when we speak /
are the valleys and peaks of a mountain range on fire."

this line is amazing imagery. anyone who has been in love (with a girl, at least i know that much for sure) has talked to them, wanting to be proper, you know, eye contact, paying attention to what she says, etc... but all you can do is stare at her lips moving.
a complete distraction, one that would make sense for instance if you were trying to talk to someone and behind them was a mountain range, with blazing fire covering every peak and valley. but it doesnt make sense, it's just lips moving. yet you can't help but stare. girl, inform me.

--obviously a song about being in love. but, the cynic, as is the Shins style, has been burned before, and even with this love he has to question if it is real. is she just playing him like the last girl? since he will never know, is he doomed to spend the entire relationship wondering? is that even what he wants? seems not worth the possibility of disappointment... but those lips moving. damn. what was i thinking about again?

"this new convection has left no wondering why /
i can't concern myself with ordinary tripe."

incorrect- he is saying CONFECTION.

tripe is the worst of food. confection is a clever fancy sweet and delicious food. he's saying she doesnt compare to other, makes them look like crap. how would "convection" make any sense ?

The Shins – Gone For Good Lyrics 10 years ago
nice. i think you're right on with the ending the relationship part, but the idea of them ever being on the same page seems naive. many people enter a relationship because its fun and new and exciting, not because they think they're going to spend their entire life with that person. could have been engaged, but the "ring" could be more of a metaphor...

hmmm i get the thinking behind most posters here, but i dont think the song is about being cheated on, nor do i think it's about falling out of love

i think it's about the absence of love in a relationship.

i think he gets with this girl and she falls in love and wants them to do the whole 'hollywood ending' type thing, fall in love and have babies and die old together. he knows that he wants that too, and likes the girl, but can't seem to force those feelings upon himself. this kind of takes off many other songs on the album where he is basically referring to himself as being incapable of love or questioning if it is real.

first part about the train- he knows the whole time they wont be together. eventually he'll hop the train out of there. and it's getting to the point that he thinks it is imminent (the ring, i think, is a metaphor for a committed relationship)

then about the lam and the dam- he is avoiding the commitment because he knows it's not for him, but doesnt want to deal with the "breakup"

chorus - obvious. trying to love someone who wont love you, if love is important to you, you're wasting it there.

poison pill - as he said before, he wasted a lot of time getting to the breaking point. but now he's there

jump and dance - she wanted to be in a loving relationship, but still committed to being in a relationship with someone whose not into it like she is. he's saying go find someone else because its not going to work with him. not because he doesnt want her, just that its not fair.

i dont feel like he ever was in love with her and fell out, i think he entered a relationship thinking it was something else and tried to make it work knowing full well that it wouldnt, then after a year he finally ends it. maybe to be alone? maybe to leave open the possibility of finding the one he wants?

it's cute that you think that, but no. when it comes to LZ it does not get better than the original.

he is right about "no quarter" it is "quarter" as in "living quarters" or a dwelling. i think the explanation makes sense, they are just pillaging and moving on. they don't stay in the town they ransack. their dogs are howling because they know it's time to move on again.

lightwing1 said it best: "...the 80s - ugh!"
the 80s were the worst decade ever as far as art is concerned. i think crack cocaine ruined society for about 10 years.
look at the movies from the 80s. for the most part, horrible. only a few make the cut, and even those (raiders of the lost ark, terminator, die hard) would not make the top 10 in any other decade. (there are a few more good ones, but they are either sequels - aliens, star wars - or were in production during the 70s - shining, raging bull).

same goes for music. 80s were so so horrible. the only good bands were ones that were even better in the 70s (fleetwood mac, dire straits, van halen, acdc, aerosmith, etc) i mean damn one of the best albums of the 80s was a compliation of eagles songs from the 70s. all of you here are blaming "rap" for today's bad music, but first consider the 80s: def leppard, poison, bon jovi, journey, reo speedwagon, motley crue, gnr, rem, depeche mode, the cure, etc... there was horrible, horrible music way before Rap. the best band to come out in the 80s was probably the beastie boys.

either way, the 70s were amazing for music. i think the 90s (radiohead, modest mouse, blur, rhcp, early weezer, etc) were pretty great as well. but the 80s, that was shit music. i am glad i was too young to like music during the 80s or i might have been fucked up in the head for real.

The Stills – Allison Krausse Lyrics 10 years ago
it's about a girl he thinks he is falling in love with, but is finding out that she has lied about herself in order to try to make him love her (this is the reason for the virgin line, girls say that to seem more desirable) so what else about herself is she lying about just to get him to love her? if she was being honest, would he love her at all? he has reason to believe she's not being genuine, come on allison, get real with him
