Within Temptation – The Cross Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I see it as general abandonment anthem. Whether it's a child abandoned by parents an adult abandoned by their spouse, or frankly anybody betrayed by a trusted friend. The lyrics fit. As anybody who has been through something similar will understand there are very conflicted emotions directed toward that person. Namely there is sadness, regret, and fear (obviously) but there is also a sense of wanting the person to come back, for things to go back to the way they were. "Release me from this cross after all these years Oh call my name and help me with this weight Even though it comes far too late" This line demonstrates this. The speaker wants help from this person even though A. They are most likely a bad person. B. This person has already hurt the speaker. and C. Would come to late for it to matter. This is the emotion that drive abuse victims back to their abuser. It's so difficult to rely on somebody, be betrayed, and immediately write them out of your head. This inner turmoil of Anger/Despair vs. Devotion/Reliance is incredibly poetic. And is to me clearly the focus of this song. |
Crash Test Dummies – God Shuffled His Feet Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I don't think its' mocking any church. I think it's mocking human nature. The people HAD FREAKING GOD TO TALK TO! and teh only questions they can ask are about their beards. God stares at that as if to say "are you kidding me?" and the people stare right back, cause they don't get it. Why would you expect God to be at your level? Why should God care about shaving? Why would you expect to understand God's words right out of his mouth? God does'nt owe you anything. Not answers, not clarity, not even a picnic. Everything given by him is something undeserved. So how ungrateful are these people at the picnic? Why with the supreme ruler in front of them, the only question they can think of is an earthly "What's for lunch?" |
Pearl Jam – Alive Lyrics | 10 years ago |
the "but i'm glad we talked" is ironically said by his mother, Vedder never met his real father and never got on with his step-father or identified with him. His mother finnaly told him the truth that his real father was a musical free-spirit just like veddar. She has no idea how her betrayal hurts him, and feels fine like she's cleared her guilt. Not aware of how completely she has just crushed her son. |
Breaking Benjamin – The Diary of Jane Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Jane is a generic name for a girl. He's in love with her, with all the stuff other people have said. But he's reached the point that he doesn't care anymore about whether she loves him, instead he want's to make an impression, to the point where when she looks back on her life, he's an entry, in her diary. |

System of a Down – B.Y.O.B. Lyrics | 10 years ago |
i agree with chidsuey. But I think the last two lines of the second stanza is operative. It seems to be a reference to 1984 when the protaganist muses that if the lower class of people (i'm paraphrasing) "stood and shook themselves like a horse ridding itself of flies" then the government of big brother would collapse. you depend on us for protection but still you feed us lies from the tablecloth they need us to survive, but lie and don't give the people what they need. |

IOW they need the people's support or at least their apathy to stay in power. but instead of being good leaders and giving the people what they need (like Steam, Wikipedia) they lie and cheat and steal, and treat people bad (Wal-Mart comes to mind) |
