Regina Spektor – Uh-Merica Lyrics 10 years ago
Sweet and cutesy? Sure, but mostly just on the surface! She's also dirty and kinky and sexy and weird and crazy, that's what makes her so awesome! She's probably not going to write an entire song with the sole purpose of constructing a masturbation metaphor, but it's totally plausible that many of her songs have that alternate meaning. Also, how do you equate an interest in masturbation/writing a song about masturbation with perversion & deviance & anything less than intelligence??

Regina Spektor – Samson Lyrics 10 years ago
It's interesting to think about how our cumulative past experience affect the way we experience each future event. For example, the experience of listening to Samson is different for each of us, depending on the course our lives have taken. And the way we experience Samson 5 or 10 years from now will likely be different from the way we experience it today.
When I hear Samson, I think of my first love. I am 20 years old, 9 months out of a 3.5 year relationship. And while it was happening, it felt like the greatest love story that ever was (Don't First Love's always?)
Three years ago, this song was simple and beautiful. Today it is heavy with bittersweet sadness. The history books forgot about us and the bible didn't mention us--not even once.

I made an account just to tell you that I had the EXACT thought when I heard this song. Isn't it so interesting how our life experiences inform our interpretation of everything? That's what makes music so so beautiful, which is why I cannot understand why anyone would vote your comment down. This is how I imagine my ex lover viewed my self discovery as well, and later, how I in fact viewed his. It's quite sad, especially the "was it everything you wanted to find?" Almost like, "was losing me worth it?" I'm torn in different directions when I hear this song, perhaps because I'm 9 months out of a four year relationship and I'm not quite over it all. On the one hand it feels like "I genuinely hope it WAS everything you wanted to find and I hope you're happy because I will always love you." But other times it feels more sarcastic or bitter, which is obviously just me projecting my feelings into the lyrics. I can almost gauge my emotional health and progress by paying close attention to my internal response to this song!

I think we all need to get over this idea of "This song is about this and I can prove it because I am a devoted fan and everything else is wrong," because that's just poison & counterproductive. That's not what music is for. The best thing about songmeanings is sifting through different interpretations and really feeling like you've learned something about an individual based on their interpretation. It's a very personal experience. Even better is when you come across someone who has an interpretation similar to yours. That's when you know a song is good--it's connected these two people that don't know each other and who will never meet. And yet upon learning that they have thought the very same thought, they each feel instantly less alone. It's amazing.
