One way the song could be interpreted... The narrator is an abusive asshole, and the nurse is his fiance. "Say hello to the rugs topography It holds quite a lot of interest with your face down on it Say hello to the shrinking in your head You can't see it but you'll know it's there so don't neglect it" Here, and whenever he mentions "you" he's talking to the nurse. He beats her. That's why she's lying face down on a rug, and he takes great interest in seeing this. The pharmacy keys, and the pills in a little cup are a reference to antidepressants that she's taking. The song is a parody basically of how deluded the man is. (It's also a wakeup call to people who are in relationships like this). "Say hello to all the apples on the ground They were once in your eyes but you sneezed them out while sleeping Say hello to everything you've left behind It's even more a part of your life now that you can't touch it" This passage is about how the woman has lost so much of herself in this relationship. She's become a shadow of who she used to be. In the end of the song, she's married the narrator, she's been beaten again, and she says hello to the rug's topography. It's a valid interpretation, especially if you're like me and you found out about this song by listening to the 13th step! Right after it Pet starts, and it seems like a continuation of this song. At the beginning of the song, she's about to commit suicide, but the narrator tells her to "step away from the window." lol That's how I interpreted it when I first heard it, and it DOES work, all though I'm pretty sure neither APC nor Failure intended that interpretation. |

Right after it says that he has a knife with him, it then mentions that he's covered in goo. It definitely seems to be hinting that the goo is blood. | |

I think at least one of the lyrics is wrong. Don't want to be down here feeding my narcissism. Well, I think the lyrics are actually: Don't want to peer down here, survey my narcissism. All though, I'm a little iffy on the first word. It could be "you". But it could also be don't. I'M NOT SURE. I know it says "peer down here" though. Other lyrics that could be wrong... The posted lyrics say "fetal and weeping" but I always thought it was "feeble and weeping." I relistened to the song though, and I admit it could be fetal. It's difficult to tell. Anyone have any thoughts on that one? One final lyric that might be wrong... The first lyric, it says, "I have come curiously close to the end, down." I agree with that almost entirely. I'm just a little unsure about the last word. I'm not sure if it's "down". I always heard it as "though". Anyone else? |

| I don't think so. Lol who would complain about tools music? Especially if they're a "fan". And how are these critics parasites? Also one of the lyrics is "we got nothing left to give you". If this song means what you say it does, then that lyric doesn't make sense because it would be like tool sayin" you ungrateful fans! We're not gonna make anymore music for you!". I think this song is more likely about record companies and rude people in general. You can interpret the song however you like, I just don't think tool has that terrible of fans, and I don't they would have felt so strongly about the few asshole critics to actually write this song just for them because I don't think the opinions of a few rude fans would perturb tool too much. However record companies trying to tell tool what to do and what their music should sound like would definitely get under their skin! Tool probably intended for this song to have many interpretations. | |
