Wild Swans – The Revolutionary Spirit Lyrics 16 hours ago
Paul Simpson described the song as an "insanely ambitious, righteous coming together of man, myth and magic".

Interesting to note that Saint Sebastian is considered a gay/LGBTQ icon, which might have been significant in the 80s when homophobia was being pushed by the UK Conservative government at the time.

According to an old Melody Maker interview, the lyrics are apparently inspired by a recurring sex dream that drummer Britt Walford had.

Spinal Tap – Stonehenge Lyrics 1 year ago
The crazy thing about the Black Sabbath story is that it was a complete coincidence. They made a short film called "Spinal Tap: The Final Tour" in order to generate money to make the full film in 1981-2. It was for investors only and was never seen publicly... and it included the Stonehenge gag.

Black Sabbath reportedly asked for a lifesize replica of stonehenge for their 1983 tour... the same time they were filming the final This is Spinal Tap movie. Black Sabbath's manager made a mistake on his measurements and the things they had delivered were far too big to use... they could never fit on a stage, even though they cost fortune.

Life is weird. Read more here: https://dangerousminds.net/comments/life_imitates_comedy_spinal_tap_uncannily_anticipated_black_sabbaths

Tripping Daisy – I Got A Girl Lyrics 2 years ago
The ups and downs of a relationship. He thinks she\'s great, but sometimes she drives him crazy. It\'s a frustrating relationship, but very common.\n\nThe song ends with them on an up, and with DeLaughter pointing out that, equally she\'s got a guy... with all his imperfections, too.

The B-52's – Dirty Back Road Lyrics 2 years ago
The song is clearly about gay sex (written by the late great Ricky Wilson), but the sad tone always made me feel there was an edge to this song. Feels darker. More about careless lovers than love.

Reckless driving on the dirty back road.

It's Prince. It's probably about sex.

@[johnnywa:35924] To be clear, Prince's comments were about SISTER specifically:

In the same interview he said: “Sister” is serious. “Head” could be taken as a satire.

Prince – Sister Lyrics 3 years ago
The song is about sexual abuse. It even has an explanation by Prince as to why he had such an extreme relationship with sex ("she's the reason for my, uh, sexuality"). It's a shame he never spoke publicly about it, apart from one time:

“All the stuff on the record [Dirty Mind] is true experiences and things that have occurred around me and the way I feel about things. I wasn’t laughing when I did it, so I don’t suppose it was intended that way.

“That’s why I stopped doing interviews. I started and I stopped abruptly because of that. People weren’t taking me seriously and I was being misunderstood. Everything I said they didn’t believe anyway. They didn’t believe my name. They didn’t believe anything.”

When Prince was 16 his step-sister, Norrine, was 32.

Weezer – Heart Songs Lyrics 10 years ago
Damn. Want to edit to add that Cat Stevens became a Muslim in 1977 -- and that it's possible that I'm wrong about Joan Baez: There could be a song from 1978/8 that River is referring to.

Weezer were signed to Geffen in 1993.

The song is completely self-explanatory, so I'll just list the references in order:

Gordon Lightfoot - "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" (1976)
Cat Stevens (the artist) famously became a Muslim.
Joan Baez - "Children and All That Jazz" (1975) / artist
Eddie Rabbitt - "I Love A Rainy Night" (1980)

Artists: Abba, Devo, Pat Benatar, John Lennon (died in 1980)
Bruce Springsteen - "Hungry Heart" (1980)
Grover Washington - "Just the Two of Us" (1981) - His highest charting song

Metal bands: Quiet Riot, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer

Debbie Gibson (actually Tiffany) "I Think We're Alone Now" (1987) - Rivers made a mistake but decided to leave it in. Both were pop idols of the 80s.

Michael Jackson - "Man in the Mirror" (1988)
George Michael - "Faith" (1987)
Rick Astley - "Never Gonna Give You Up" (1987)
"I can see clearly"? Presumably not the classic Johnny Nash 70's song?

Terence Trent D'Arby - "Wishing Well" (1987)
Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock - "It Takes Two" (1988)
DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Possibly: "I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson" (1989)

Nirvana - "Nevermind" (1991)

Weezer are signed to David Geffen's company.

Lol. Gigantic wasn't an EP, it was just a single. And it came out in 1988.

I don't think Malkmus is actually annoyed with Steve West here, it sounds more anecdotal. Like the recounting of a very bad day on tour, or in the studio, than an actual slight at Westie.

There's definitely some meanings to the songs, Malkmus does occasionally reveal what they mean to him. I'm not entirely sure what this one is on about, though :)
