In casablance, the main guy always tell the girl "Here's looking at you kid". and in the last scene you think they might run away together, but the don't end up together and he uses that line again one last time. So it's basically just a great reference for relationships that didn't work out. |

I don't think he had expectations of his first wife leaving him. He had the Great Expectations about his first wife and then she did leave him. He's remembering that and expecting the same thing from anyone else he has a relationship with in the future. |

I think the part about the metal hitting glass is describing a car wreck.
And "I'm sorry I couldn't go" refers to him playing a show when he found out and not being able to leave to go to the hospital (maybe?)
