Live – The Beauty Of Gray Lyrics 7 years ago
Some of the commenters here seem to be saying that the song is saying to not ask "why?", but I'm pretty sure that it's the opposite.

"The perception that divides you from him/her is a lie.
For some reason you never asked 'why?'"

They never asked why they see a division between them and others.

"This is not a black and white world.
You can't afford to believe in your side."

Things aren't as simple as people believe them to be.

This song reminds me of "The Way It Is" by Bruce Hornsby.

"Said, 'Hey, old man, how can you stand to think that way? Did you really think about it before you made the rules?'

He said, 'Son, that's just the way it is. Some things will never change. That's just the way it is.'

But don't you believe them."

The songs seem to be about the need to think and not just accept things because they have always been the way that they are.

@[TurnMeOn:14896]
"I hate to tell ya (not really:), but it's 2013 and there is more greed, corruption, superficiality, and the like NOW than in the past...and it ain't gonna get any better."

In the Middle Ages and during the time when Rome was big, there was greed, corruption, etc. in large amounts.
Those are only some examples of times where you can see that things were not that great.

Those things have been around since time immemorial.
It has not gotten any worse, it is just more apparent to us right now.

There was never a time when things were better, but I believe that, as long as we are able to continue moving forward, someday things will get better.

Blue Öyster Cult – Sole Survivor Lyrics 8 years ago
"Sole survivor, cursed with second sight"

I don't think that he has the ability to see into the future.
I think that this refers to the fact that he is the last surviving human, and he knows it. So he also knows that no matter what happens humanity will be gone as soon as he dies.
That is why he did not get on the ship. It wouldn't change anything if he did, and what use would there be in living as the last of your kind?

Well, I don't agree with that kind of thought, but I assume that is what the "Sole Survivor" was supposed to be thinking.

Iron Maiden – For the Greater Good of God Lyrics 8 years ago
@[sniktawekim:5280]
The main part of the song seems to be "For the greater good of God"
In other words, it is about those that believe that all that they do is for their god, and about how they never seem to truly question why.

"Only God would know
And as he lies in heaven
Or it could be in hell
I feel he's somewhere here
Or looking from below
But I don't know, I don't know"

This seems to imply that God could be anywhere, but at the same time doubts that.

"More pain and misery in the history of mankind
Sometimes it seems more like
The blind leading the blind
It brings upon us more famine, death and war
You know religion has a lot to answer for"

People cannot see that religions do not add up with what they say, and so they follow others that cannot see that either.
In the end, what was the point of those religions?
What will their answers be to the many problems that they have created or furthered?

The ending seems to point out that Jesus' death achieved no relief from the suffering, and it asks, "Why? Why are all of these problems still around if he died to save us?"

Iron Maiden – For the Greater Good of God Lyrics 8 years ago
To me, this song is about the hypocrisy of those that follow religions and the damage that those religions cause.

"Are you a man of peace
Or a man of holy war
Too many sides to you
Don't know which anymore"

Followers claim that peace is their religion's only way.
However, these very same people believe that they should fight with all who disagree with them.
What part is to be believed?

"So many full of life
But also filled with pain
Don't know just how many
Will live to breathe again"

War ends life and causes sorrow to those who survive.

"A life that's made to breathe
Destruction or defense
A mind that's vain corruption
Bad or good intent
A wolf in sheep's clothing
Or saintly or sinner
Or some that would believe
A holy war winner"

Some fight to destroy; some to protect.
Many are corrupted by power, whether or not their intents were when they started.
Some think that they are deceivers to be condemned, saints to be revered, sinners to be saved, or simply one following the will of their god.

"They fire off many shots
And many parting blows
Their actions beyond a reasoning
Only God would know"

Their unreasonable actions are only explained with it being "God's will".

"And as he lies in heaven
Or it could be in hell
I feel he's somewhere here
Or looking from below
But I don't know, I don't know"

Humans fight for their gods, but where are they?

"Please tell me now what life is
Please tell me now what love is
Well tell me now what war is
Again tell me what life is"

What is life to these people?
Can they even answer that?
If they can, then how can they explain the wars that they fight in?
War almost always involves the taking of life, so can their answer for life still stand despite that?

"More pain and misery in the history of mankind
Sometimes it seems more like
The blind leading the blind
It brings upon us more famine, death and war
You know religion has a lot to answer for"

Despite the peace that religions often strive for, they cause more war and suffering than there would have been without them.
Even knowing all of this, they still continue down their paths of destruction, as if they were blind to all of the pain they cause.

"And as they search to find the bodies in the sand
They find its ashes that are
Scattered across the land
And as the spirits seem to whistle on the wind
A shot is fired somewhere another war begins"

As soon as one war ends, another begins.

"And all because of it you'd think
That we would learn
But still the body count the city fires burn
Somewhere there's someone dying
In a foreign land
Meanwhile the world is crying stupidity of man
Tell me why, tell me why"

We have had millennia to stop the wasting of life, but we never learn.
Everyone speaks about our faults, but nothing is ever done to fix them.

"For the greater good of God"

Many do all these things while essentially reciting that it is for the sake of their god.

"He gave his life for us
He fell upon the cross
To die for all of those
Who never mourn his loss
It wasn't meant for us
To feel the pain again
Tell me why, tell me why"

This seems to be saying that Jesus' sacrifice was in vain.
He was meant to take all of the sins (and as a result, all of the burdens) from everyone, but they still face those very burdens daily.

Near the end of the song, it sounds like it says:

"Can anyone read, anyone feel,
that I'm losing my patience?
I just came here to bounce.
Ladies all waxed.

I'm losing my _.
I just came here to dance."

Also, it does not sound like "patience" the second time.

Billy Joel – We Didn't Start the Fire Lyrics 9 years ago
"We didn't start the fire"

The problems did not start with any of our generations, despite each generation thinking that they are the cause of all the problems of their time.

"It was always burning
Since the world's been turning"

There have been problems since the beginning of existence.

"No we didn't light it
But we tried to fight it"

Everyone has been trying to fight the problems in their times.

"But when we are gone
Will it still burn on, and on, and on, and on"

Despite the efforts to stop the problems, they continue to exist even after the generations pass on.

Billy Joel – We Didn't Start the Fire Lyrics 9 years ago
According to Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Didn't_Start_the_Fire#History

"Joel got the idea for the song when he had just turned 40.
He was in a recording studio and met a friend of Sean Lennon who had just turned 21 who said "It's a terrible time to be 21!"
Joel replied to him, "Yeah, I remember when I was 21 -- I thought it was an awful time and we had Vietnam, and y'know, drug problems, and civil rights problems and everything seemed to be awful."
The friend replied, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, but it's different for you.
You were a kid in the fifties and everybody knows that nothing happened in the fifties".
Joel retorted, "Wait a minute, didn't you hear of the Korean War or the Suez Canal Crisis?"
Joel later said those headlines formed the basic framework for the song."

Voltaire – God Thinks Lyrics 9 years ago
This song seems to be about how everyone believes that they know what "God" thinks, despite never even talking to such a being, and how they use "God" to justify their actions.

"God thinks all blacks are obsolete farm equipment"

They kept slaves in the West using the Bible as a tool to justify it, and, after slavery was stopped there, many still received poor treatment.

"God thinks the Jews killed his son and must be punished"

No idea about the punishment part, but the Bible says that the Jews (indirectly?) killed Jesus, who proclaimed to be the son of God.

"God thinks the white man is Satan"

I do not remember who, but I think that some people believed that Europeans were devils.

"God thinks we should all convert to Judaism
God thinks we must all be Christians
God thinks we should all embrace Islam
God thinks the only true religion is Hinduism"

All of the adherents in religions think that their religion is correct because their "God" said it was, but if each "God" thinks that, which is correct?

"God thinks all people like you are hateful
God thinks all people like you are an embarrassment to creation
Self righteous, judgmental, first to throw the stone
And you're using His name for your own protection"
"And you're using His name for your own agenda"

People who follow religions tend to hate others that do not follow their religion.
They believe that they are better than others, judge others, and quickly blame others, while using "God" as an excuse for their behavior and purposes.

"God thinks the sun revolves around the earth?
God thinks there was something very wrong with Copernicus"

If I recall, they initially rejected the view that the Earth revolves around the Sun, since in the Bible, the opposite is implied.

"God thinks abortion is murder"

Some followers of religion apply rules to anything that they do not know about by connecting them to other vague rules that likely did not have any relation to it.

"And God thinks everything that science gave us is wrong"

They hold on to what they have been taught, which often goes against what humanity has discovered through observation.

"God thinks women deserve it"

Some religions treat women very poorly

"God thinks AIDS is a form of punishment"

Some people seem to think that there is only one way to get this, and, so, they believe it to be a punishment, but that is not the case, as, one can get it from unclean equipment in hospitals and a few other ways.

"I hate people who blame the Devil for their own shortcomings
And I hate people who thank God when things go right"

When people act in rude ways, or things do not go well, they blame the "Devil" for causing those things, and when things are going good, or they act nice, they thank "God" for making those things happen.

"God is a liberal, God is a Democrat, God wants you to vote Republican
Never trust a man who puts his words in the mouth of God and says it's absolute truth
It's lies and it smells like death"

Those who vote and those who are voted for tend to associate "God" with a side.
However, all of the sides go against what their texts tell them about "God".
So, anyone who says that their side is right for that reason is lying.

"It's all in a days work, taking money from the poor
Why do you think that God would need your dirty money if He wants to start a holy war?"

Why should people give money to anyone for religious causes?
A real "God" should not need money to do things.

"And I, I know what God thinks
God thinks you're a waste of flesh
God prefers an atheist"
God thinks you're an idiot
God prefers a heretic
God, God"

The writer is basically copying what other people do.
They are saying what they think and attributing it to "God".
They seem to think that followers are wasting their lives, that atheists and heretics act better, and that the followers are idiots.

"God thinks puppies need to die
And God thinks babies need to drown
'Cause God is neither good nor bad
God is you and me
God is everything"

There is no "God".
There is only humanity, and humans are not perfect.

Scorpions – Send Me An Angel Lyrics 10 years ago
Actually, in Isaiah 14:12...

'helel' comes from 'halal', which I think means "to shine", and "to boast".

'ben', I think means, "son of/name carrier of/descendant of".

'shachar', I think means, "dawn/morning".

So, 'helel ben-sahar' probably means something like, "shining son of the morning", "boasting son of the morning", or "star of the morning/morning star".

Styx – Mr. Roboto Lyrics 10 years ago
"'The problem's plain to see: too much technology
Machines to save our lives. Machines dehumanize.'
This could simply be part of the story, or is a comment that seems to be a bigger issue today than in 1983, the idea that we are desensitized by the machines and technologies that surround us. It is a double edged sword as technologies are also able to preserve life."

Going by your other observations, I'd say that, "The problem's plain to see: too much technology", might refer to the fact that almost everyone had created their own "Mr. Roboto" persona, and that anyone looking from the outside would easily notice that.

"Machines to save our lives", might refer to the fact that everyone used their personae to save them from all of the difficult situations in their lives, the same way that Kilroy had.

"Machines dehumanize", might refer to the fact that their personae would rob them of their natural selves or their humanity in other words.

Anyways, your interpretation is one I'd have never thought of.

I always thought the song was just about a dystopian world, with a guy who happened to save everyone while pursuing his own goals, and who was mistaken for a hero and a robot along the way.

Mother Mother – Bit By Bit Lyrics 10 years ago
It sounds to me like all of the stress of city life piled onto the singer, and they had enough.

"I'm gonna get away from all those mouths and my shit"
Information overload and other problems.

"I'm gonna say good-bye to all the la-di-da-di-da-di-da-di-da"
All of the things that people expect from everyone else in everyday life.

"Some cop sticking up my wagon"
Perhaps a cop searching their vehicle, with the definition of "sticking up" being "to rob at gunpoint".

Aside from that, in case anyone's wondering, I believe that when they say:

"One by one(one by one), I'm gonna get my properties all bundled up(bundled up)
To the branch of a poplar tree and saunter off"

They mean that they will be using a bindle, which is "a bundle carried by a hobo (usually containing his possessions), often on a stick slung over the shoulder".

"I said goodbye but I --

"Everywhere now reminding me

You won't be getting in to the Promised Land"

The Jewish:

"'Cause we are the divine

Hooters – All You Zombies Lyrics 10 years ago
I don't think this has much of a true interpretation besides the obvious Bible references and the lines "All you people hide your faces. All you people in the street."

However, this is my interpretation of the lyrics:

Moses stood up to Pharaoh, even though there was going to be consequences.
"Holy Moses met the Pharaoh
Yeah, he tried to set him straight
Looked him in the eye,
'Let my people go!'"

He went to the mountain and got the Ten Commandments, but broke it in anger, after seeing the idol that the people had made while he was gone.
"Holy Moses on the mountain
High above the golden calf
Went to get the Ten Commandments
Yeah, he's just gonna break 'em in half!"

A metaphor for the people being punished afterward.
"The pieces gonna fall on you"

They mocked Noah for building the ark, but it didn't dissuade him from continuing his work.
"No one ever spoke to Noah,
They all laughed at him instead
Workin' on his ark,
Workin' all by himself"

He took his family with him on the ark to be safe from the flood.
Some of his family's descendants eventually became the Israelites.
"Only Noah saw it comin',
Forty days and forty nights,
Took his sons and daughters with him,
Yeah, they were the Israelites!"

The people who weren't on the ark were wiped out by the flood.
"The rain's gonna fall on you"

A lot of the people are embarrassed and afraid to let others know that they are followers of God(e.g. Peter denying Jesus), and a lot of the denominations keep to themselves and don't try to reach out to the others everywhere and be a community of Christians, undivided.
"Holy Father, what's the matter?
Where have all your children gone?
Sittin' in the dark,
Livin' all by themselves,
You don't have to hide anymore!"

Most 'followers' of God don't have the courage and vigor that those such as Moses and Noah had, thus the "zombies" part.
Eventually, it's all going to fall on them for doing nothing.
"All you zombies show your faces,
(I see you out there!)
All you people in the street,
(Let's see you!)
All you sittin in high places,
It's all gonna fall on you!"

I think this song is about the things usually associated with summer.

The first and second paragraphs talk about the nice weather, traveling and dating.

The third paragraph talks about how they aren't purposefully trying to cause problems, and that they just want to have fun, because that's their way of living.

The fourth paragraph seems to talk about anticipating the next summer, when they can all go have fun again, and the possibility that they might not be so rambunctious next time(e.g. "or maybe we'll settle down")
