I heard the Airborne Toxic Event cover this. The lead singer dedicated it to his grandma, who had recently passed away. She'd asked him to sing her something "But not one of those Airborne songs, too much yelling" so he sang her this song. What a sweet and perfect song for a grandma. I remember all the grandkids gathering around my grandma, her reading us a story. She could have been reading us a calculus textbook and it wouldn't have mattered, I just loved to hear her voice. I miss her voice so much. I loved to hear her sing too. She'd whistle sometimes too. I'd give anything to hear her sing. The Book of Love is more than just lovers, it's all the people, things, places that we come to love and treasure over a lifetime. It truly is long and sometimes boring but it's OUR book of love. |

I think he's talking to his little daughter. He's telling her that's it's ok to be scared, that he's there now. He tells her over and over how much he loves her and how much she means to him. She wears her socks to bed just like he does, and he notices that and it makes him love her even more, to see how they are the same. |

This song reminds me of a relationship (if you could call it that) long ago. He wanted to go out and party all weekend and I would shadow him, just to be near him. We'd fall asleep in the early morning hours and sleep off our hangovers all day. I'd often wake up before him and just watch him, memorizing the freckles on his back as he slept. If it was up to me I wouldn't spend all day in bed but wasting daylight with him was ok. It was the only time I could pretend we were truly together. I understand these lyrics perfectly. They aren't sweet and romantic. They are bittersweet and sad. The day is wasted but she's ok because that's the only time they get together. |
