This song is unique in an odd way... the metaphors and similes are pedestrian and at first blush not up to Dylan's standard, e.g "time is a jet plane it moves too fast" but when I thought about it I think he, Dylan, is playing with the idea of romantic love being pedestrian and it is only the higher love-the love of God-that warrants great poetry. As we know later Dylan becomes immersed in his passion for Christ but this crisis-his marriage breaking up-provides the catalyst. |

I have listened to Dylan a long time and there is one thing I know...there are more than one interpretation to his lyrics and that is the majesty and beauty of his art. When I listen to this song the words, " crawling down the avenue...go black and blue" are evocative of the passion of Christ. With that insight the song takes on a personal slant, i.e, Dylan imagining, recreating the relationship he has with Christ and Christ's love. I would categorize myself as an agnostic/atheist/deist but that does not diminish my appreciation of Dylan's poetic evocation of the love Christ can offer. |

This song/poem is about obsession and how obsession changes your reality. Love can be an obsession as can hate or any human emotion. The man in the song is obsessed with this woman so much that his reality has become twisted and his existence no longer makes sense...he in fact no longer exists, he has died from his obsession like Lazarus died from disease and now looks to a Saviour to bring him back to life. It is a chilling look at the crippiling power of unrequited love. |
