Tool – Rosetta Stoned Lyrics 10 years ago
Yes, "Wings for Marie" and "10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2)" are both about his mother's passing, but the entire album isn't about that. Do you think Vicarious, Jambi, The Pot, and Right in Two had anything to do with his mom? No, they didn't. Granted that his mother's passing is a great influence to him, that doesn't mean everything he writes about is his mom.

Also, Rosetta Stoned is not at all about L. Ron Hubbard. That would be Eulogy. While L. Ron may be among the group of people being mocked in this song, it is not about him or scientology.

I think you're pretty spot on here. I did a project on Tool for one of my college religion classes and I used parts of this song. My professor proposed basically the same theory: that Maynard is mocking the phonies out there who trip on psychedelics and discover the meaning of existence.

Moiraine has very valid points as well. Maynard is not saying that the ideas and revelations that are brought about by drugs are meaningless. It is simply that they are not answers to life that need to be shared with everyone. The person in the story believes that he is "the chosen one." No one is any more chosen to gain knowledge about our existence than anyone else.

I think that Introverse's comments were unnecessary and rude. If that's your opinion then share it, but don't cut other people down. Also, Maynard and all the members of Tool let drugs like acid and DMT heavily influence their art. Maynard is not trying to discredit anyone who allows that to change their thought, and TheJackyl wasn't saying that. He is merely mocking those people who believe that they are special and more gifted than everyone else because of their drug use.

Tool – Ticks and Leeches Lyrics 11 years ago
I thought earlier today of the possibility that Maynard was writing this song to his record label, or other authority figure. Suppose that they told him that they were looking for Tool to have a more metal, hardcore sound, so they responded with this song. It doesn't sound much like their style (vocals wise that is). Maynard is usually not as harsh and scream-o sounding. Then these lyrics make sense:

"Hope this is what you wanted.
Hope this is what you had in mind.
Cuz this is what you're getting.
I hope you're choking.
hope you choke on this."

The song is obviously still good, but it doesn't sound like a song Maynard would typically sing.

Thoughts?

Tool – Eulogy Lyrics 11 years ago
I think your interpretation provides a very interesting perspective into the song. However, I think the lines:

To ascend you must die
You must be crucified
For our sins and our lies
Goodbye...

mean that in order for Hubbard to be a true savior he must actually be crucified and die for the sins of his followers. That is what Christian ideology says that Jesus did. However, Hubbard didn't do that and so he won't be "ascending."

And then Maynard says "goodbye" to send him on his way because he fucking can.

It is about L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of scientology.
