Elton John – Burn Down the Mission Lyrics 11 years ago
that part where Elton is singing aaaahhhhhahhhhhhaaaha conjures an image of people that are baptizing one another and looking up towards the sky amongst the trees along a river back or pond. Than taking off there bedsheet type robes and yes they still have something on (i'm not that much of a hippie) maybe they are wearing their undergarments or bathing suits. ------and goind hog wild...Like kids at the pool.

I sure do miss this type of joy.....AT 47 most of my peers and just part of the rat race and status quo.

The part of the song that I like the most is the transition part where you here EL singing ahhhahhhh and than the piano starts to kick in. I have a vision like a 70's Mountain Dew Commercial. Maybe even some Colorado rapids. Where people are not only taking off their clothes (not all of them stupid), they are dropping the judgments and all rejoicing in the water, riding the rapids and thus dropping their guards, their walls and thus judgements.

If only for a few moments.

Damn, I love those kind of commercials. As well as those times. Even though I was only a kid.

Elton John – Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters Lyrics 11 years ago
The real irony here is that those that have everything are dying of thirst. They are chasing something that is only temporary. Perhaps not even there. They know not if it is day or night.

While EJ has found a piece of mind and zen like state for himself. Tasting the water and not just guzzleing and still being thirsty. Savoring... the beautiful night of NYC. The Moon over Manhattan and the bright, loud and cheery morning of the city.

I've felt this while walking through 5th and Figueroa near Bradbury Library. The buildings right in front of the Library have this avant nevau water fountain. It truly can be beautiful at night when only the security guards man their posts. And the solace of night and its solitude can bring a peaceful feeling as long as one does not long for what they do not have.

Just to expound on the first paragraph.Whn EJ talks of "trash can dreams that come true," I feel he is talking about his dream of coming to America and making it big. And that in essence, it is all a facade. The fame, the game, the rat race we call "The Big Apple." The critics and the bull-shit.

hhmmm. i have a series of thoughts that have intertwined meanings. Perhaps when EJ refers to"trash can dreams," he is talking of dreams that are better off in the can or in his case a dream such as his success as a premier song artist coming to fruitiion.

I think it might be bigger though. Any great song artist is so because they have the ability of creating something that WE can ALL identify with.

I Know I might sound existentialist here but perhaps EJ is seeing the beauty in the contradictions and farcities of NYC. He may be feeling the gratitude of a good friend (perhaps a lover.) maybe even a woman. And this intimacy is what we all really seek. Either that or a piece of mind.

While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters (the blue bloods) or should I say vampires of the night and society are all chasing after something. Like an addiction the night life can be a quest of a fleeting feeling. A search for answers outside ourselves or in lust and drugs when piece of mind can exist around intimacy, acceptance and self-acceptance.
Love.

Yeowww! I feel like im in fucken English Lit.

i think that there is/are a metaphor here that can transcend time and places. Anywhere really.
I think the metaphor relates to "judgment" and how it is a natural human phenoma in every culture, country, city or village. The cocktail of judgement is expounded when most orthodox religions exist. Especiallin in the centuries previous to this one.

I think that Elton refers to the men of power, the Joneses as well as church parishoners (like neighbors) as all being able to be too judgemental. Ironically, it is when people get to fanatical about what they fear and hate that they become one in the same with these fears. Alot of which, we see throughout history.

Perhaps its this figurative or perhaps literal translation that Elton is implying that we move back into our hearts and not so much in our heads. Something to ponder. Or not. : )
