The first verse he’s saying that both physically and mentally, he’s not going anywhere; he’s not moving, he’s stuck. And the same goes for this girl he speak of. Because of this long distance relationship she’s in, their love won’t last but she can’t see that due to her fear of her man falling out of love with her. In the chorus, he saw her in the moonlight, and their paths crossed. I took this as he saw her in his sleep, he can only see her or be with her, in his dreams. But even in his dreams, their love is once again spoiled. She pulls away from him and shuts him out. He’s so close, but she won’t fully give herself to him (“But you shielded me from your glow/ Like a moth against your window”). And he won’t stop her, he’s too shy to make such a bold statement. Next verse: He is so down from his emotions & feelings, he is just drifting along his ambitions; not taking action upon them. He was surprised that this girl & he connected, due to how fluttery both of their minds are (maybe), and he’s reflecting on this. However, she is still with the other fella, and this causes our main man to feel even more torn from her. Now, he too, can’t believe that the relationship the girl & he once had, is no longer there. At the end he finds himself still broken and states that he won’t love another because he’s too scared that he will feel this pain once again. |

Let me start by saying that I think the way StarClaire describes it, is perfectly perfect. Good job StarClaire! But this is just the opinion I have about this wonderful song. "Gold teeth and a curse for this town were all in my mouth >(Gold teeth are things that are fake and put over what is real-ex. a tooth- and his “curse” is him just not liking where he is and how this place makes him feel.) / Only, I don't know how they got out, dear >(he exemplifies how much he doesn’t want to be there) / Turn me back into the pet I was when we met I was happier then with no mind-set >(he was a “pet” to this person. Meaning, he would do as they say and wouldn’t question it. He would do anything they asked and he wouldn’t question it because it’s what he wanted to do) And if you took to me like a gull takes to the wind >(If the said person would take to him and his ways so naturally) / Well, I'd 'a jumped from my trees And I'd a danced like the king of the eyesores And the rest of our lives would 'a fared well >(He would stop everything for this person and get out of his comfort zone- the trees- and be merry.) New slang when you notice the stripes, the dirt in your fries >(The person he’s signing about now sees that there’s bad in the world -the dirt in your fries- or they’ve been hurt emotionally by something or someone. ‘New slang’ could mean, this person now has a different take on things/ life, or a new lifestyle.) / Hope it's right when you die, old and bony >(He hopes that the said person only encounters pain or sadness when they’ve reached the end so they could have lived a life of happiness as long as they could) / Dawn breaks like a bull through the hall >(A new day is charging through, you can’t stop it) / Never should have called But my head's to the wall and I'm lonely >(He’s contacted the person and now he regrets it or feels embarrassed about it. He’s even wishing it to the everyday people- the bakers. Everyday they do what they do and even though it’s something so simple as baking buns, they put their all into it- and bleed into their buns- until the job gets done) I'm looking in on the good life I might be doomed never to find >(He sees happiness and the good life and he wants to be a part of it, but he’s scared that he’s “doomed” to never have that. He’s not meant for it) / Without a trust or flaming fields, am I too dumb to refine? >(If he were to get the chance to have the good life or positive things in his life, would he be so stupid to decline it or them?) / And if you took to me like >(If the person accepted him) / Well I'd a danced like the queen of the eyesores >(I can’t make out why he says ‘queen’ here instead of ‘king’. An ‘eyesore’ is a building that is considered ugly; the opposite of a landmark. So when he says this, he could mean that he is calling himself the highest -king and queen- authority for his non alluring life. He accepts that it’s his own fault he made it so lackluster. However, if the person he’s singing about could accept him, then -even though he’s still king or queen of himself-, he might be happier -the dancing- because somebody loves him.) / And the rest of our lives would 'a fared well >(If the said person could accept him, he would be happy. And they would live their lives getting along together) |

| I too am in the same situation. The guy initiated that everything was going to be great and that he wanted to be with me, but when it finally came down to it, he couldn’t commit. I don’t hate him, but he did waste a good year of my life :/ And so I agree with everything you said about this song- it’s great & so true! | |

First off, I agree with spark29 and what they say. Secondly, I feel that he's not really talking to a specific person, but rather society in general. It's not a love song, but a song about growing up and taking on responsibilities. He knows that he has to grow up, he sees it's coming towards him, and he's kind of frightened. He's being up front in saying that he won't be able to do everything perfectly, so don't expect that of him. Even if what he does isn't perfect, he wants to do things on his own (not in the sense that he pushes everyone away, but in the sense that whatever he does, it's from him- no one else). All in all this song is very beautiful and simple and I love it! :} |

I think this (amazing!) song is talking about how this girl is falling hard for this guy that she's just met or only got a glimpse of (in other words, love at first sight, aka fairy tale stuff). Other guys have never made her feel this way before and it kind of scares her. Breaking down of ze lyrics: "Don't want to lose you"- he's great, she wants to keep him with her "Don't want to lose"- however, she thinks that if she gives into her strong feelings, then she'll be going against everything she's ever pushed away before, therefor, losing the battle she's had with herself "I never knew you, I never knew"- she doesn't know him, just what she can see "Your body's harmful, the very shape/ the cracks are deeper, on every plate"- she is visually very stimulated by this guys appearance and she thinks that underneath it, he's just as beautiful (a great personality) "I get impatient, with every word/ the more you ask me, the more i've heard"- I feel like maybe they've now started conversing and she wants him to stop beating around the bush and just ask her out or something like that "This is a thirst I have never had/ i've never bled for another man" - like I said, she's never felt this strongly about a guy before; it's so strong that she feels like she's losing everything inside of her (a fantastic line!) "My face screams...without an emotion"- I think this means that she has this reaction to this guy (her bold feelings), but there was nothing to really make her feel this way because she hardly knows him (the emotion to make her face scream); something is scaring her, but it's not the guy himself "In the darkness comes another, another/ hold her by the thumbs, the other, the other"- I take it as, from somewhere (the darkness) comes the guys girlfriend (another); and the "hold her by the thumbs" part gets me, I really don't get that part... Sorry if I debunked this too much, I just really love this song and I think Austra's really good at music :} |
