Elvis Costello – Tear Off Your Own Head (It's a Doll Revolution) Lyrics 1 year ago
Okay, let's spoil the fun with a little capitalism! We are all of us expected and pressured through "institutional learning facilities", advertising, and marketing to accept limited, well-defined, and readily manipulated roles. Men, women, conservatives, progressives, whatever skin color, sexual orientation, etc. We are ALL dolls, and we are all nudged to fit a prefabricated role rather than invent our own. We can mess around with gender roles and manipulate each other to feel like we have some sort of control over our own destinies, but it's an illusion. Escaping this paradigm involves rejecting the basic role of Doll. Destroying the doll we have become. Ripping off our own heads.

Tammy Wynette – Stand By Your Man Lyrics 1 year ago
Totally a love song, if by "Love" one means "desperate and self-loathing". Absolutely cringe-worthy sentiment. I'm all about gooshy, squishy, stickysweet love, forgiveness even ; but this "tolerate all manner of neglect" just icks me right out. Nasty, nasty song.

Afro Celt Sound System – When You're Falling Lyrics 2 years ago
No clue what Mr. Gabriel had in mind with these lyrics. I expect it\'s one of those "make what you want of it" deals. So here goes. \n\nHow about : The singer is observing a creative genius who is oblivious to their talent. The person who genuinely has no idea how much they are revered, or why. Akin to, but much deeper than, "the girl who doesn\'t know she\'s pretty".\n\nI get there mostly from the chorus, "When you\'re falling, I can\'t tell which way is down" which I interpret as, "You seem frustrated with yourself, but all I see is wonder. To you, you\'re falling, but to me you\'re soaring"

Berlin – Like Flames Lyrics 3 years ago
Looking back at 2020 with the pandemic, political chicanery, and BLM protests this one makes a lot more sense. The complacent don't understand how these issues affect them, but they will.

Great song. Very compelling cover by Girl In A Coma as well.

The Devil Makes Three – Goodbye Old Friend Lyrics 3 years ago
Having done the 'amicable divorce' thing, this song sure covers the spectrum of emotions. Absolute loathing and intolerance for the ex, remembering that it wasn't always bad, and squashing all the emotional conflict to just keep things civil.

So it goes when you make an ass of yourself. As the offense ages people almost never forget, but generally they cease to care.

The more successful politicians know this fact, and rely heavily on it.

I'm totally going with the "She's a vampire!" interpretation.

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

So the official story is this one was written to/for/about their grandfather. These kids certainly don't hold back the venom, do they?

"Well, how did I get here?"
-- Talking Heads

Only I, for one, am not as philosophical as The Talking Heads so I never quite got it. This song slammed it home for me when I needed it most.

At some point in your life, you may wake up and not like who you've become. You've got years of scars--injustices given and received, painful losses, embarrassing miscalculations--to overcome; you've got present relationships and situations to consider; and you've got to make changes to secure your own future mental well-being. Some people will watch you change, and the energy and excitement you invest in that change, and assume you are preaching a New Way to them. But you're not. Now more than ever you know that another life is none of your business, and you'd just like some acceptance, or at least peace, while you take control of your own to live on your own terms, honestly.

"we are all poseurs, cliché's etc incapable of an original thought or action."
Pink Floyd said it pretty in "Breathe":
--And all your touch and all you see
--Is all your life will ever be.

Poly grabs the concept and just smacks you upside the head with it with her relentless delivery. It's a brutally nihilistic song if you think about it too much.

Girl In A Coma – Clumsy Sky Lyrics 5 years ago
When you're trying to play it cool, always talking yourself out of it because you think it's somehow wrong. But now you're done resisting and the only way to proceed is to pretend you don't know what's holding you back. "Hush, heart. Just play dumb."

I love how the music transitions at that lyric from tense restraint, brief feedback, and then "Party Time!" Just beautiful.

Evanescence – Everybody's Fool Lyrics 6 years ago
Guess I'm 13 years late to the party. But, although that is not actually the case, I admit this is how I hear it as well. The song is just so much more intense and moving when it is turned inward like that, rather than just being the catty rant it actually is.

Black Lips – Noc-A-Homa Lyrics 6 years ago
As noted above. Noc-A-Homa has a decent write-up in Wikipedia.

Big theme I've noticed for Black Lips is "If you don't know what the song is about, then you can't know what the song is about." (see also Crystal Night). These guys really seem to enjoy poking society's open sores, but I don't really get the idea they do it to be trollish punks. Rather, I think they do it because some things need to not be forgotten and irritation invites exploration and analysis.

Predated Blade Runner by 4 years, but still I can't keep it out of my head when I think about Roy Batty & pals. Speaks so much to their emotional immaturity in contrast to their occupation-specific virtuosity.

The Damned – Sanctum Sanctorum Lyrics 6 years ago
Replace misheard lyric "Love like a run our way by" with
"Love like a carnival's runaway ride"

And "To where once islands cried" with
"To where once sirens cried"

It matters. Anyone who's ever attended a traveling carnival, especially at night, especially as a teenager with, or in pursuit of, a new lover can recall that certain delirious abandon. The infatuation, the promise, that can really only be appreciated after the sun has gone down.

Have another read of "Wait for the Blackout " from The Black Album for what darkness means to The Damned. Darkness serves to intensify feelings. Love, in the case of Blackout; and utter emptiness as Sanctum Sanctorum reflects on the loss of love--the personal holiest of holy feelings.

The song is simply gut-wrenching.

The Damned – Absinthe Lyrics 6 years ago
1) Absinthe is yummy (if you're into licorice
2) Has Vanian never had the stuff? Admittedly it's totes amazeballs as a liquor if you're into licorice, but at the end of the day it's...liquor. That tastes delightfully of licorice. I mean, he'd may as well sing the praises of tequila, but that's already been done by Sam the Sham.
