Pixies – Velouria Lyrics 11 years ago
While I agree with much of GodzillaFoil for his insight I'd also like to reference that 'Shasta' is a sanskrit deity & also a generic term for 'guru' & teacher. I think there are refernces to death/enlightenment as well as what you commented on. California is particularly populated with those who believe in 'Lemuria'. I think there's double entendre in there - or a couple of levels - just as Cobain often used.

This was absolutely my impression (what Kim said) when I first heard the song. It's about a racial cliche. It's lyrical content is similarly themed to Neil Young's "Southern Man". I don't think there's much doubt. This one's pretty clear. He wrote about stereotypes, in addition to Biblical, pagan & environmental issues, violence and the general degradation of culture, etc.

I totally agree with both the comments of Uh_Andy & Johnny Rooster, although different. Black Francis was fascinated by Biblical, "Pagan" & ecological themes. They resonate throughout much of his work. He's not referring to drugs, etc.
