I think you can merge the three. Perhaps the speaker's wife died along with the child in the miscarriage? "but then, that's the problem"- the problem is that she's dead, and thus they can't resolve their arguments. He misses their arguments, because at least they were together. The stanzas aren't in chronological order, i guess. the first one would be verse 4, at the hospital, with the stillborn baby. Next, verse is verse 3: the speaker returns home to get back to work. Then 2, where he gets a call from the hospital that his wife is dead. Then finally the first verse, where he mourns the time they shared. |

I feel you, bro. Literally, the exact same thing happened to me. The meeting, the becoming friends, the dating the best friend. I was amazingly lucky in that she had had a crush on me, too, and we kinda dated for a few weeks. I want her back so badly, but I respect her enough to give her the room she needs. If, and only if, she breaks up with your friend, go for it. ask to be more than friends. if you can manage to be a hundredth of the man you know she deserves, you'll be a hundred times better than any other man could be to her. |

I think the most likely interpretation of this song is along the lines of a breakup. But more specifically, I think this could be about the breakup between a soldier and his girlfriend. this goes along with the extended metaphor of war, and it also fits into the drop- he thinks about her until he literally is dropped into the warzone, and is unable to think about her anymore amidst the destruction. Only in mid-firefight(middle of the bassline) does he suddenly remember her, and the return to the piano at the end might indicate that his hesitation at her memory got him killed in action. This song has a lot of personal meaning for me, too. I recently went through my first breakup, and i'm still trying to find a way to either get her back or cope with the pain. Raise your Weapon has both symbolical and literal parallels to my current situation. "Ripping my heart was so easy, so easy" I lament over how easily I got my heart broken. "Launch your assault now, take it easy" I'm conflicted over whether to blame her, or whether to just let it go. "Raise your weapon, raise your weapon" I play Airsoft, so "raising my 'weapons'" is literally how i'm coping with the pain. Trying to find happiness in the activities I enjoy. "One word, and it's over" I'm afraid of telling her I love her, for fear that "one word" will ruin whatever we still have. "Ripping through like a missile, ripping through my heart" Same as the first line. "Rob me of this love" I can't be with the one I love, and it takes all the love out of my life. "Raise your weapon, raise your weapon, and its over" Back to the airsoft parallel: for the time it takes to empty a magazine on my pistol, i concentrate on nothing else. but as soon as the slide locks back, the pain returns, and the momentary escape is over. "Love your ego, you won't feel a thing" "ego" is latin for "self"- If you can feel good about yourself, the pain is less so. "always number one, the pen with the bent wrist, crooked king" Even though I would gladly put her happiness before my own, I need to remember my own importance in my life. "Sign away our peace for your war" I let her go, and in doing so I gave up my peace of mind for internal conflict. "one word, and its over" repeat of previous line. "dropping your bombs now, on all we built" double meaning here. Her departure felt like it tore down whatever we had together. OR, if I admit to her how much I care for her, it might be like bombing whatever we had left. "How does it feel now, to watch it burn, burn, burn?" Self-mockery- I can only watch now as the remains of our relationship disintegrate, and I torment myself with inaction. "raise your weapons, raise your weapons, and its over" once again, I try to escape into my hobbies, but it's a temporary solace at best. the third verse is a repeat of the first. I don't know what this means for me yet; chronologically, I guess it would be me getting over her. Or possibly, Her taking me back, and the drop is our relationship blooming and exploding into love and lust and bass and amazing and happiness. One of my favorite deadmau5 songs. Beautiful, soul-searing, and somehow showing both strength and vulnerability at the same time. |
