I agree with the comments that this is about depression and talking to God, especially with the references to drowning and "calling my father".

I just wanted to add that the last verse:
"I start to part two halves of my heart in the dark and I....
.... Empty sky, no way that's me 'cause the other half of my heart's asleep"
was originally on the song Blasphemy, from No Phun Intended- an album Tyler wrote when he was younger (before twenty one pilots).

This song makes up the majority of the second part of the album's story.
In this song, it describes how the main character feels neglected by people and by the state. ("You were never truly loved, you have only been betrayed"). He then seeks revenge on the world in the form of nuclear war ("I have given you the code"- he has gained access to the nuclear launch codes, "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Fire." - the launching of the nuclear weapons). The song then describes the aftermath of the nuclear war ("There are no countries left to fight and conquer, I think I destroyed them all").

Surprised that there are no comments yet, considering it's Muse... It's a great song, despite perhaps not living up to the tag of "Citizen Erased Part 2".

not entirely sure what this is about...
anyone else notice that it has the words "only child" in it, which is the next song on the album? not sure if this has any significance, but could there be a possibility that they are linked? or is it just coincidence?

the line(s) about checking for fibres is talking about fibres from the serial killer/robber's (Dennis Rader's) clothes... whilst tying the victim up, the victim would have fought back, trying to bite the assailant evidently, due to his hands being tied up. Hence the lines "Check for fibres in the gaps between the teeth, the floorboards" followed by "Check the fingerprints, go through the trash"... the assailant is making sure he hasn't left any incriminating evidence behind (fingerprints, strands/fibres of his clothes etc.)

Brilliant song.. he's the only artist (that I know of) that can make a 23-minute song that doesn't get boring. pure genius.

I reckon this is about a friend/boyfriend looking after a girl when she's having a rough time, and trying to help her escape this "hell" that is her life... just my first impression. Surprised this hasn't got any other comments...

My impression of the song is that it is about the so-called "bros before hoes" rule, so to speak, which is basically about not choosing your girlfriend over your mates.

"And when you're out with the boys
Would you ever contemplate not ditching us
As soon as she turns up, as soon as she turns up?"

^that kind of sums it up.... it's about not ditching your mates when your girlfriend turns up, and the issues that it creates when you do that.
