Florence + the Machine – All This and Heaven Too Lyrics 11 years ago
This song to me is about understanding life. Not just love, but everything, about finding the meaning of life, about finding one's place in the world. It's about trying to find a word to describe one's condition as a human being, and the willingness of some to do whatever it takes to know that word.

Florence + the Machine – Only If for a Night Lyrics 11 years ago
This song for me is about the loss of childhood innocence. Listening to this, I realized just how far I had come from my days of glitter and cartwheels and handstands. Now, I am restricted to the services in the graveyards, only getting to hold my little "cerimonials" in the dark of night or all alone. The ghost in the song is my memories of the times of running aruond in the school yard. "And the only solution was to stand and fight" is about the fights I had with my friends that began the transition from kid to young adult. "But you came over me, like some holy right, and although I was burning you're the only light" refers to how I lost all those fights and most of my friends because they had the backing of the rest of the group, while I stood alone, refusing to give in. An exceptionally personal interpretation, but it's what I think.

Florence + the Machine – Never Let Me Go Lyrics 11 years ago
Suicide; plain and simple. If you watch the music video, it shows her and a boy dancing around alone on an ice rink in teir socks. The couple is obviously in love, but she keeps dripping black water and oil. By the end of it, even her love for the boy and all the effort she puts out (portrayed with the soap bubbles) can't stop her from slipping into the blackness. The lyrics "never let me go" mean both that she doesn't want to be forgotten and that she doesn't want to come back to the living.

Florence + the Machine – Hardest of Hearts Lyrics 11 years ago
This to me is not about an abusive relationship, but about the fear of a self-destructive person to enter into a relationship. "Tenderest touch leaves the darkest of marks" sounds to me like she is scared by a new relationship and beats herself up, but physically and emotionally for it, maybe because a past relationship was bad and she is too scared to try again. "Kindest of kisses breaks the hardest of hearts," shows that she is trying to love this man, but she can't bring herself to forget her fear.

Florence + the Machine – Landscape Lyrics 11 years ago
This song to me seems to be about a girl who's family has been messed up with a series of suicides and mental illnesses. "It's burning through the bloodline" and "born from dark waters" make me think that there has been more than one such problem. Now this girl, who has been relatively stable despite all this, suddenly suffers through the suicide of a close family member, like a parent or close grandparent, and is now unstable like the weather. The song is being sung by a friend who is outside the family and can do nothing to help. The part about the lighthouse to me is about an internal strength that had supported the girl through the previous troubles, but which is now gone. At the end when she almost commits suicide, I think what stops her is a desire to rise above her family, at least for a little while longer, until maybe she can move past the most recent death.

Florence + the Machine – Falling Lyrics 11 years ago
This song, to me, is about suicide. The song itself seems like a suicide note, written to a boyfried, maybe. She talks about her whole life, her mistakes, ups and downs, and love life. She says that she's not scared of jumping or falling, but rather landing, and this could be both in her life and her suicide.

I have a really personal connection with this song. When I first heard it, the line "fallen out of trees" caught my attention because I spend so much time climbing trees. I always think about how much fun it would be to jut jump off the top and fly, and then I remember that I can't because I'll land and hurt myself. Then it says that "this is a song for a scribbled down name that my love keeps writing again and again" which is very pointed for me as well. The section "danced myself up, drunk myself down" is slightly less literal. Mostly, though, it's the idea of wishing to fall forever as opposed to landing that is really important to me.
