Alanis Morissette – Mary Jane Lyrics 10 years ago
I disagree with all those saying that this song is about A woman or A girl. It's about ALL women. It's a feminist song, about how women are taught to hide their feelings and desires and put themselves second to the men in their lives. And it's like a straitjacket, that's why all that matters is her freedom.

And this song is definitely not about pot. Mary Jane is just a generic woman's name that probably worked better in the song's cadence than other names did.

It's not hard to imagine Alanis Morissette writing a feminist song.

I generally agree, but I'll just point out that the brothers going blind line is probably about masturbating (parents used to tell boys that they'd go blind if they masturbated).

Joanna Newsom – Peach, Plum, Pear Lyrics 10 years ago
Lots of great comments here. I think it's about an intense, short relationship (galloping manic) that ended abruptly out of fear of how fast it was moving (swallowing panic) by him.

Then she runs into him, and feels a little out of sorts. I think it should be "sensitive boor" instead of "bore," as in, she feels awkward next to his coolness, coolness that floozies would feel more comfortable confronting because they don't really understand it (that's why they afford to be choosy). She's thought a lot about him since the relationship ended (read the right books) and she thinks he's a lot more awesome than he was before (which is why she's oozing surprise).

Of course, that's just her justification for why he should be with her instead of someone else: she really gets him. But doubt sets in: is she really the only one who understands him? (Does she run rare?) If so, how can he knock her down with the palm of his eye if she can interpret his looks so well?

In the end, she has mixed feelings about this chance encounter. He's changed some, but not monumentally. It's like spring, the water runs from the snow, and maybe something she was stuck on is moving again and she can go on with her life.

On the other hand, what does it mean that he doesn't have the same reaction to her? It's like fall, hence the end-of-summer fruit there.

Of course, that's the best part. This is all about the randomness of how we choose people, and, as someone else mentioned, peach plum pear is a little choosing rhyme, like eenie-meenie-minie-mo.

And the last line could be about awkwardness: just look at anything else in the store and think about that instead of him, pretend like you don't care.

Or a better meaning: Peach, plum, pear the first time. Then peach, plum, NO PEAR i.e. NO PAIR. No relationship, no couple. He chose someone else.

4 interpretations of that last line. Pretty awesome.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood – Relax Lyrics 10 years ago
People who are on here saying this song isn't about sex, please go watch the music video. There is no way this song is not about sex, and there's nothing wrong with writing a song about sex.

More specifically, my guess is this song was about gay bathhouse sex. Since they were a gay group they probably knew a thing or two about bathhouse culture, and there are lots of guys who try not to come with the guy they're with and look for another to play with.

You go to the bathhouse, which probably isn't near your house, then you pay $20 to get in, and now you're so excited that you want to come in like the first 5 minutes but you know that if you do you'll only have played with one guy. I don't have this issue, but I've seen guys just leave for no reason, just smile and say "thanks and goodbye," and I've learned that it's just part of the way bathhouses are.

So that explains the chorus, now the verse:

"But shoot it in the right direction"

When you do come, make sure it's worth it. Like not by yourself in a little room after the guy you're with just left.

"Make making it your intention-ooh yeah"

Think about sex, not orgasm.

"Live those dreams
Scheme those schemes"

If you relax, i.e. postpone ejaculation, you can have what you dream of/scheme for, instead of just a few minutes of mindless pleasure.

"Got to hit me
Hit me
Hit me with those laser beams"

Come on the narrator, probably because he'll enjoy it.

Yeah, funny how such a song became a mainstream hit. It reminds me of The Village People's "YMCA," which we danced to in elementary school and I later found out was about public gay sex in the YMCA showers.

The Smiths – The Boy with the Thorn in His Side Lyrics 11 years ago
Um, I was hoping for a decent interpretation here but it seems like people haven't even gotten as far as the reference to Paul in Corinthians:

"And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure."

There are different interpretations of what the thorn in Paul's flesh is - contemporary protestants usually think it's blindness, others interpret it as his inability to convert everyone. There's another interpretation, though, that it refers to Paul's homosexuality, since it's pretty well established that he was a closet case.

My guess is that's what the song is about, since blindness makes a lot less sense in context. Plus Morrissey is himself a closet case.

That said, is he just taking thorn in the side to be homosexuality? I was wondering if there was more nuance here.
