BINGO! ;D And well said. I have no idea of what he's actually had to portray to the media outlets just to get this song and its meaning to seem less subdued for the general public, or what spin his handlers have put on its conotation, but I think you've understood it perfectly :) His message has been received :D

Thanks for the information-interpretation! I think you've touched on some really great points :)

I think that it means both, and it may be constructed to be exactly that: equivocal and ambigious. But, if you read it through, then look at the video of the song, it is about "war", that IS their message. Daily war, battles big AND small, and in a broader sense, the wars that affect everyone. :)

Very good points. I think it can be taken in a broader sense too, what do we sell out to, on a daily basis and how does it -affect- everyone? What sacrifices do we make daily? What do we subcumb to? Who are we, and what do "we" stand for? ;D

This reads like a review of the song, the band fun., and a copied psuedo-interpretation from wikipedia, or some other media outlet, LOL I'd like to hear/read what YOU'VE interpreted from this song and it's meaning; if I had wanted the bio, or media 411 I would have looked it up for myself. I get that this is under the subtitle of "General Comment", but what purpose does it serve to rehash another persons publicity? Or even to rehash the media's understanding and presentation of the song, the band and what their handlers portray? O_o ;D

American bias, again? ;) It's definitely a comment on war, and I think you've grasped some of the main concepts, so how does it apply to American society and how is the rest of the world -affected- by war waged for economic uplift? Peace :)

And please use critical thinking, media is designed as propaganda and subtle politcal effect, and although inherently a catchy song, with great lyrics and excellent musical tone, this song has an important value and wants everyone to understand (without the necessity of "Pagan Jesus", etc) what we all are essentially "...dying for"; what value do we have? Peace :D

It has absolutely nothing to do with your Pagan Jesus, go back and read it with a coherent and logical filter, please..:P It's a sociopolitical/economic statement, it really has nothing to do with God, or a christian dogma or even trinity :P

I think the majority of people have misinterpreted the meaning of this song; in it's most logical sense, it's a sociopolitical comment on America and how it waged war with the Middle East.
If you go and watch the music video, the video in itself is a comment to how far we have come, and how archaic war is and what it's used for, to gain economic uplift for a nation, at the expense of Human Life....
The question remains as to whether it's orchestrated propaganda or the actual reality...There are several glaring clues that abound in the song lyrics:

Some nights, I stay up cashing in my bad luck
Some nights, I call it a draw
(1st stanza: America banking on economic uplift of waging war)

Some nights, I wish that my lips could build a castle
Some nights, I wish they'd just fall off
(2nd stanza: The political spin that’s put on the public to wage such wars; i.e. “The War on Terror”; the hunt for “The Weapons of Mass Destruction”, where we needed the weapons of mass deduction*) :P

But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh Lord, I'm still not sure, what I stand for oh oh oh
What do I stand for? Oh what do I stand for?
Most nights, I don't know anymore
Oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa oh oh
Oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa oh oh
(3rd stanza: The ghost is the representative of what remains and how it affects the world entire...and the shattered economy and housing/mortgage crash in America; So, what quantifies me? And now, what do I stand for? No property, no jobs to pay for said property...)

This is it, boys, this is war, what are we waiting for?
Why don't we break the rules already?
I was never one to believe the hype,
Save that for the black and white I try twice as hard and I'm half as liked,
But here they come again to jack my style
(4th stanza: The declaration of freedom for true independence, the war against government and private interests, and his comment and questioning of us to go against the grain...but at the same time does he believe the spin? His general dichotomy of being Human and whether it has any value to pigeon hole himself into a “black or white” existence, and that no matter what he does, society is designed as such to be an all or nothing existence: democratic or republican...black or white :P)

That's alright, I found a martyr in my bed tonight
Stops my bones from wondering just who I, who I, who I am, oh who am I, mm, mm
(5th stanza: The only thing he believes in, “Politicians make strange bedfellows” direct interpretation, but I have to believe in —something-, so I will make whomever my “martyr”.)

Well some nights, I wish that this all would end
'Cause I could use some friends for a change
And some nights, I'm scared you'll forget me again
Some nights, I always win, I always win
(6th stanza: Is anyone going to get up and stand, if I make this comment who will be with me? And the even though I know I wage a good fight against hypocrisy I know I win more than I lose...His meaning)

But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh Lord, I'm still not sure what I stand for, oh
What do I stand for? Oh what do I stand for? Most nights, I don't know (come on)
(7th stanza: he still struggles with the effects of his society)

So this is it? I sold my soul for this?
Washed my hands of that for this?
I miss my mom and dad for this?
No. When I see stars, when I see stars, that's all they are
When I hear songs, they sound like a swan, so come on
Oh, come on, oh, come on, oh come on!
(8th stanza: being separated from his family and being sent to war, and realizing that we all live under and within the same world, “When I see stars...” also symbolic to the stars of what he’s fighting for on your American flag and your America. The Swan Song: "Swan song" is a metaphorical phrase for a final gesture, effort, or performance given just before death or retirement. The phrase refers to an ancient belief that the Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) is completely silent during its lifetime until the moment just before death, when it sings one beautiful song. The belief, now known to be incorrect, had become proverbial in Ancient Greece by the 3rd century BC, and was reiterated many times in later Western poetry and art. @wikipedia.org Actual meaning...He’s giving you a chance to speak out and speak up BEFORE it’s too late)

Well that is it, guys, that is all, five minutes in and I'm bored again
Ten years of this, I'm not sure if anybody understands
This is not one for the folks at home, I'm sorry to leave, mom, I had to go
Who the fuck wants to die alone all dried up in the desert sun?
My heart is breaking for my sister and the con that she called "love"
But when I look into my nephew's eyes,
Man you wouldn't believe, the most amazing things, that can come from,
Some terrible nights, ah (oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa, oh oh)
(9th stanza: The constant repartee of the political environment that has now become entrenched with your media, and after 10 years of war, he KNOWS that —still- no one understands or is willing to admit this, at all. And the loss of all those soldiers, civilians and your people who died under that sun in the Middle East and in Africa, for OVER ten years...)

Oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa, oh oh
Oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa, oh oh

The other night, you wouldn't believe the dream I just had about you and me
I called you up, but we'd both agree
It's for the best you didn't listen
It's for the best we get our distance, oh
It's for the best you didn't listen
It's for the best we get our distance, oh

(10th stanza: he knows his attempts to rectify this precarious predicament have no lasting results, so he intends on distancing himself [like the majority of us in the world et al.] have done)...

And no, I'm not American...but anyone can tell that even the construction of the MUSIC that sets the tone for the entire song, is akin to a "Battle Hymn", the drum beat and content of each musical note. So, in his words: "Stand up" ;D
