I personally think this song is about someone who really wants to fall in love but has been unsucessful. So he wants something else that's more attainable that he can control that will make him forget about wanting to fall in love. I think he bitterness and jealousy to people in love is he talkes about tying them together and throwing them in the ocean and then talks about chaining them together and throwing them into the fire left to burn in there arrogance. I think he feels like a outsider looking in. Feels like he's running out time. |

I definitely think you made the right decision and don't think you're horrible at all for doing it. You saved that guy from being in a relationship with someone who didn't truly love him. I know I personally would want anyone to settle for me. I was in similar situation with my boyfriend of 4 years and he treated me so well and my parents loved him. So I stayed for a lot longer than I should have cause I was comfortable and didn't think that anyone would love me as much as he did. Eventually realized how selfish I was being and that he deserved someone that would love him as much as he love me. Hardest thing I've ever done but so glad I did it. |

I agree with everything ribena_wrath said except I think when he says "I know there's a big world out there like the one I saw on the screen in my living room late last night it was almost too bright to see" to me that mean that he know there's something better out there. Like when he says it was almost too bright to see. I think he feel like it unattainable which is why at the end of the song it seems to me that he just gives up and has another drink. |

To me this song is about idealism. I can relate to it on a lot of levels. When I was younger i would read about this exotic places and imagine what my life would be like there. Like when he says he "was in love with a place, in my mind, in my mind" but when he get there i don't think it was the place he built it up to be in his mind. Which explains why he then goes to New York once again hoping that this will be the place where he'll be free and be himself. But it seems like me he found that nowhere is going to really live up to what you make it out to be in your mind. You have to be realistic and make the best of where ever you are. We live in an imperfect world and nowhere is going be great all the time. |
