Arcade Fire – Wake Up Lyrics 11 years ago
I find it interesting that most people are saying that the "nothing' is religion. As a religious person, I've always thought that the "nothing" was a lack of religion/faith. Nothing=empty promises of pleasure and temporary satisfaction and "love."
That being said, this is one of my all time favorite songs. "We're just a billion little gods causing rainstorms, turning every good thing to rust.."

The All-American Rejects – The Poison Lyrics 11 years ago
a personal interpretation of this song..

You were so young
And I guess I'm old
Open your eyes
I'll keep mine closed
I prefer standing
And you take your seat
I'll be wide awake
And you'll be asleep

The boy is stating how much he and the girl are unalike. I'm assuming there is an age difference, but i get the feeling he is referring to her innocence in the first line. When he says "Open your eyes/I'll keep mine closed" I feel like she is seeing something that he is not..perhaps she's seeing happiness, and how to obtain it. From my personal experience, she is seeing goodness, and how happy being "good" can make you. He refuses to open his eyes to that.

And you'll fall down a hole
That's the one place we both know
You take me with you if you could, but I wouldn't go
I guess that sometimes we both loose our minds
To find a better road

I think the "hole" is a place that she wants to be, and she wants to be there with him. I once told a boy "I want to find a happy place, and i want to take you there with me." I think that's what is going on in this line. But he won't go. Why won't he go? I suppose he is too stubborn to go.. he doesn't approve of where she is taking him. Maybe he thinks it's not a "real" place..

I can be pensive
You can be so sure
You'll be the poison
You'll be the cure
I'm alone on the journey
I'm alive none the less
And when you do your very worst
Mm it feels the best

He speculates things. He is a thinker. He doubts..? She is so sure of what she knows. She brings him distress(possibly because he sees the differences between them) but she is also the only one that can make him happy. He feels alone in his life, and probably he feels numb. But he is alive none the less. I'm a bit shady on the last line.. maybe he gets enjoyment when she betrays the "goodness" for a less virtuous trait.. but that's a long shot.

And you'll fall down a hole
That's the one place we both know
You take me with you if you could, but I wouldn't go
I guess sometimes we both loose our minds
To find a better road

And you'll fall down a hole
That's the one place in this world that we both know
You take me with you if you could
But if you could I'd lose everything

She wants to take him to that happy place, but he doesn't want to go. He'd lose everything.. his old way of life.. his old habits... his old friends... everything.

Can't you see the faces melting as the sun rains from their eyes
Who are you to keep your head with the hearts that you hand behind
Look at yourself, look in the mirror, don't you see a lie?
That you tell yourself again a thousand times
And the truth that makes us laugh will make you cry
You wanna die? No?

This is him trying to convince her that this lifestyle she's living is not what is going to make her truly happy..

So you fall down a hole
That's the one place where we both know
You take me with you if you could, but I wouldn't go
Because sometimes we both loose our minds
To find a better road

She doesn't listen to him. In the end she "finds her better road." But in the process, she has to leave him behind..
