Damien Rice – Eskimo Lyrics 8 years ago
Well, there's always the matter of eskimo hospitality to be considered.

It is said that eskimos are the most welcoming people to guests, even going to the extent of "lending" their wifes for a guest if said guest is without his own wife while visiting.

To me that may or may not have to do with the cold on regions eskimos usually live, i.e. lend his wife as a way to make the guest get warmer while sleeping/resting through body contact and body temperature exchange. But obviously that often would lead to other (more sexual) matters.

Anyway, getting back to the song,

Tiredness fuels empty thoughts
I find myself disposed
Brightness fills empty space
...

I find myself exposed
Tapping doors, but irritate
...

Those verses make me think he's alone, feeling lonely, looking for company, but getting turned down (tapping [on friends' or family's or lovers'] doors, but irritating [said people] and beeing sent away).

So that brings me back to the eskimo hospitality thing, everybody turns him down, but an eskimo firend wouldn't. He's looking for a friend (lover?) that would be as welcoming as an eskimo would.

So maybe the eskimo(ishness?) he's looking for is an metaphor for a really, really good friend (lover), who'd endure being around him even when he's his worst self, that nobody else tolerates.

But since Damien's lyrics tend to cling to darker and more twisted facets of romance, love and well, sexual matters, maybe the eskimo here is someone who literally acts as an eskimo would, and, well, lends his partner for Damien's satisfaction.

IMHO anyway.

Danzig – Mother Lyrics 10 years ago
As a matter of fact I do think there is an explicit religious intent in the lyrics, more specifically In the chorus:

"Not about to see your light
But if you want to find hell with me
I can show you what it's like
Till you're bleeding"

where "Not about to see your light" could be interpreted as salvation, religion, christianism, he is not willing to "save himself", "go to the light" of the father's/mother's religion.

That sentence is followed by "But if you want to find hell with me", meaning he is, on the other hand, willing to show the father/mother what "his hell", his religion (satanism?) is like ("till you're bleeding").

On the official music clip there's a scene where (Glen) Danzig is standing over a pentagram while he is singing the chorus, near the end of the clip, followed by a scene where he rips a chicken open, spilling blood over a girl standing on a "sacrificial altar" with "the daughter" (supposedly) standing beside him. At the very end of the clip, she smudges the chicken blood over the other girl's belly, and licks it.

That said, don't get me wrong. I love this song! But I do confess it gets me a little restless because of the religion related stuff (being from a catholic upbringing and a fan of metal - I'm a walking contradiction).

System of a Down – Lonely Day Lyrics 12 years ago
Such a lonely day
And its mine
A day that I'm glad I survived

I think the only day somebody can really claim for their own is their birthday.

I think it's about someone who's feeling really lonely about his birthday.

Like beeing all alone on your birthday and that beeing not only common, but something he doesn't even want to mention to anybody.

He just wants it to be over, so, when it's past, he's just glad it's gone (and he survived).

And if you go, I wanna go with you
And if you die, I wanna die with you

Take your hand and walk away

maybe he just lost someone dear (no, it's not Daron's brother for he is an only child), like a wife, a girlfriend or a child, and that's what makes it the most lonely of all.
