I have been a Rush fan since the mid-1970's when 2112 came out. Some of their albums appeal to me more than others. Presto! has been a favorite of mine since it first came out. And I really enjoy The Pass, War Paint, Presto and Available Light. To me Available Light seems like the story a person nearing the end of their life chasing down the memories of their life. This person has traveled and experienced a lot during their lifetime, yet now finds themselves alone. I always feel very introspective when I hear the song. |

Initially I thought that this song was about making world wide changes. But as we were looking for music at our wedding, it felt more like a love song. A song about building a life with someone that you love. And that all of those decisions that are made as a couple affect not just the one person, but everyone that is involved in that family. As it was, we played a number of songs that had special meaning to my wife and I as prelude music. This was the last song we played before the processional song. We wanted the guests to understand that for us, everything that we did before that point became unimportant and that "History starts now." |

It's amazing to me that for most everyone everything is black and white. Switchfoot is a Christian band so this must relate directly to God or Heaven. To me the song is for everyone trying to find their place in life or the world. Where do they fit into the grand scheme of everything. It is more about how we each fit into certain parts, like a puzzle. The person has finally found their lot in life, what their life means and where they belong. It could be a relationship, a family, a job or a religious belief. But they are happy and content with their place. Home. |

The song is about making the most of chances given to us. "The New Jerusalem" is a way of saying making to the a promised land, whatever that may be for each of us. It talks about the nervousness we all feel when facing a new situation in life. The uncertainty that makes us ache deep down. The "dark'ning dawn" is another way of saying "it's always darkest before the dawn", meaning our uncertainty of a change is usually at its worst right before we go into it. |

The song is only about finding that one true love of your life. During my first marriage, I always felt that love was something that wasn't truly that fantastic. As the years droned on, I thought that as a marriage continued on, it was supposed to be two people existing in the same space and nothing more. After my divorce, I wasn't sure was dating would be like again. This song reminds me of what real love is all about. It is a feeling that gives a person the courage to do things they may have never thought about doing before. The first stanza is about finding someone that is a person that is free. "Fire flying from your hands" is a free spirit. Someone not afraid to take chances. "There are caravans we follow, Drunken nights in dark hotels. When chances breathe between the silence, Where sex and love no longer gel" Is about the meaningless sex and relationships that we have until we find that person that brings tears to our eyes just thinking about them because of the sheer happiness and joy they have brought to our lives. |
