@[Papaver:50538] Definitely about addiction. The video for the song opens and closes with William S. Burrough’s quotes about being an addict.

The War On Drugs – Under the Pressure Lyrics 6 months ago
The come down here was easy, like the arrival of a new day
But a dream like this gets wasted without you
Under the pressure
Is where we are
Under the pressure
Yeah, it’s where we are, babe
You’re the only one — like an illusion

When it all breaks down and we’re runaways
Standing in the wake of our pain
And we stare straight into nothing
But we call it all the same
You were raised on a promise
Found that over time
Better come around to the new way
Or watch as it all breaks down here
Under the pressure

Well the breakdown here, stolen or we let go
I want to drive by Anna, staring on
And you call “here, another whisky”
Crying in a beer, pissin’
I’m crying in my bed
Loosening my grip
Fading in the world
Just trying not to crack under the pressure

Yeah, it’s where we are babe
Under the pressure

It's a great song, and is the heart of Forgiveness Rock Record. It is literally a song about the band as well as a surface level song about exes.

I really like the connection to Picnic at Hanging Rock. I don’t know that is what the song is about, but I kind of want it to be.

Just stopped by after a few years to check. Yep. The lyrics to this song are still all wrong here. “The pressures grassing’ you down.” Ayfkm? Great song, ruined by wrong lyrics spread across the net.

British Sea Power – Be Gone Lyrics 2 years ago
The song is about renewal. “Floreal” is the beginning of spring in the French revolutionary calendar (guiillotine is a related reference.). “Aorta liver ventricles” refers to the documented medical relationship between one’s heart and liver to live. “Indigo to chrystalline” is a reference to a new age religion (Star Children). “Agonic lines” are imaginary equatorial lines running from south to north poles, or any place at which a compass points true north.

These absolutely are not the lyrics of the song.

British Sea Power – North Hanging Rock Lyrics 2 years ago
Actually, I think it’s “ever since time memorial.” I think it is a play on the phrase “since time immemorial.” The line is followed by “it’s all stored up in chemicals,” which in this context I think refers to a genetically passed on, shared memory. There were studies done in the 20th century on flatworms that showed worms could access memories (to navigate mazes) of other worms by ingesting them, leading to the possibility that there is a physical/genetic component to memories. Weird and obscure. . . right up BSP’s alley.

Matt Pond PA – Snow Day Lyrics 2 years ago
Great song. One correction: it must be “We’ll follow a set of deep tracks” not “I will follow . . . .” He’s including another in his experience (“So clearly your breath . . . . “. “So clearly your eyes framed. . . .” They are following a set of deep tracks together, and he cautions not to think of the struggle behind them.

Matt Pond PA – Devil in the Water Lyrics 3 years ago
@[yibbitta:36984] I think it probably has a couple of connotations here. One: alcohol. Devil Water is a common term for alcohol. I think the POV of the song is a guy who got drunk (confused over whether it is the ceiling or the floor) and made some regrettable decisions. He then obsesses over how it makes him look to others. What do others know? What do they think? The Devil there is the detail he might be defined by or remembered for by others. He’d like to forget it, he’d like it to be forgotten by others, but it’s not that easy.

British Sea Power – Machineries of Joy Lyrics 4 years ago
@[DenzelForevar:34001] The first story in that Bradbury collection is also titled "Machineries of Joy," and it is about a group of priests who disagree about the theological implications of men traveling to other planets. Personally, I think there is a clue about the meaning intended in the song there.

Neko Case – The Needle Has Landed Lyrics 4 years ago
@[ThisIsTrent:33693] I think heroin use is definitely one of the meanings here. Neko is pretty open about her parents' drug use when she was growing up, including when she lived in Washington.

British Sea Power – Machineries of Joy Lyrics 4 years ago
Interesting take. I can kind of see it given the inspirational source material — Ray Bradbury’s short story of the same name, which is about conflict and reconciliation among a group of priests. That material, however, suggests to me that the meaning of the song is spiritual, but broader than just atheist/believer. I too think it is a dialogue. But between a believer constricted by the orthodoxy of organized religion and a believer free from that orthodoxy. I think the “he” in “tell me what he said” is God.

submissions
British Sea Power – Machineries of Joy Lyrics 4 years ago
@[DenzelForevar:33449] Machineries of Joy is the first short story in that collection. It’s about Catholic priests, Irish and Italian, in Chicago who have very different opinions about the Church’s views on space exploration. In the end they learn the thing that motivated them most on the issue was to not be proven wrong.

@[assin:28858] I read in an interview that it started off as a song about light pollution, which it continues to be, but evolved into something broader too. I think someone mentioned here it is about skepticism of technology and the promise of scientific advancement. That feels right. Reminds me of the Bloc Party song "Pioneers" in that regard.

Veruca Salt – Seether Lyrics 5 years ago
@[Lougolas:27706] There is no doubt that is the A-line story of the song. But Nina has specifically mentioned that the whole album is largely about young women discovering sexuality and power. I think many of the interpretations attached to the song are valid. Even if not completely consciously intended by the author, if that is the case. That's kind of how poetry works.

Kasabian – Shoot the Runner Lyrics 5 years ago
I don't think there is a lot of mystery here. Shoot the runner = shoot the heroin (take the chang). In the drugged state, he's the King and drug is his Queen (bitch). The King is living in the moment, dreamily knowing that it will pass. And some day he'll die . . . maybe at the hands of his "Queen."

Bloc Party – Pioneers Lyrics 5 years ago
@[Televised:27354] I have a different take. I think the song is about the illusion of progress. It’s a commentary on our failed culture that over-estimates an ability to conquer problems and tame the world with ambition, science, and tech. It’s a view of our culture as a Huxley or Ralston Saul kind of dystopia.
