ETA These lyrics kinda make me think of the way victims of sexual assault are not only dismissed as liars and hysterics ("there is nothing to explain"), but also occasionally forced to come into contact with their assailants (repeatedly so, in the case of judicial hearings or, in College cases in which the rapist is not expelled; "you eye each other/ as you pass/ not just once/ not just twice".). They're also given much more attention than the perpetrators (hence the "light you can feel [it] on your back"), which makes the situation much much worse. The whole world is literally telling the victims to let it go and just get over it, to "wish away [their] nightmare". |

Am I the only one that sees this song as something about date-rape from the perpetrator's perspective? The "Jigsaw Falling Into Place" is the guy (well, most of the time it's a guy, but the opposite happens too) realising his plan is working. "Just when the drinks arrive", "just when they play your favourite song", "this place is on a mission", those are all pieces of the Jigsaw puzzle Falling Into Place "Before The Animal Noises" (sexual grunting). "The Walls Abandon Shape", "Closed Circuit Cameras", "Before You Run Away From Me", "Before You're Comatose" are all about getting the victim wasted and slyly and quickly getting him/her out of the bar. But what clinches it to me is the "Wish Away Your Nightmare" line, which is basically what rape victims are repeatedly told to do, either because it's nearly impossible to prove or because most people think they "secretly kinda wanted it". So all they can do is wish away their nightmare of being assaulted. It also helps that the melody and progression of the song go from sexy/pop-ish to nightmarish/intense as the lyrics move on. |

not necessarily "young" girls, IMO, but girls who are just with him for what he can give them. and even though they have no emotional investment in him, he finds himself always falling for them and coming back to them. I first heard this JUST as I was starting to get over my ex (a young girl both literally and in this song's meaning) and it just killed me. I wasn't a fan of this guy before, but now I am really very impressed by him. not only a great pop songwriter, but amazingly skilled vocalist as well. I see it as a guy who is lonely and attaches himself to girls who provide with him unhealthy and - eventually - destructive relationships. and I can only say "been there, done that, still going to therapy over it". the song really moved me and also opened my eyes to my own behaviour with girls. lovely piece of music =) |

| surprised there's nothing here about this, or on any recording of this song. it's one of the great anti-love paeans! It is what I feel right now.. it is what everyone who has poured all of themselves into a relantionship and yet were still discarded. the blues stay no matter what. the "goodbye" at the end is debateable (sp?) but this song is everything I have been thinking about love and romance for quite a while. any thoughts? | |

this song is EXACTLY what I'm going through! I first heard it ages ago, but now it resonates so strongly. I got dumped 3 months ago and I am going through a REALLY rough depression (I am bipolar, which doesn't help). Not only that, I'm having an enormous amount of trouble letting go of her, even though it is clearly what I have to do. Anyhow, in this meantime I started seeing this girl who is a friend of my brother's girlfriend. She is REALLY into me, but since I can't give her my feelings in return, I'm slowly cutting her loose. the worst thing is that we ARE really compatible in almost every way, but still, it wouldn't be fair to her to lead her on when I still care about someone else. And even still, I'm in no condition to be in a relationship right now. These lyrics say exactly what's been in my mind for the past 2 months... |
