Death Cab for Cutie – Transatlanticism Lyrics 8 years ago
@[randatronic:9138] Hmm, I never really thought about it as being one-sided; to me the relationship is not so much non-mutual, but more like.. "tacit", in other words unspoken, but shared (I get this from the line "most people were overjoyed, they took to their boats", I get the sense that other people are completely unaware of his sorrow and heartbreak).

I feel like something has forced them to be physically apart (something "natural" and unpredictable and unavoidable, symbolised in the song by "rain" which the "clouds opened and let out").

Nonetheless, interesting perspective.

Death Cab for Cutie – Transatlanticism Lyrics 8 years ago
Metaphorical or not, to me it's obvious this song is about two people drifting apart - maybe spiritually, maybe physically, maybe emotionally. Perhaps it was for the best but the singer, at least, as a large portion of the song suggests, still misses her and longs to still be close to her.

The line "the clouds above opened up and let it out" may suggest that whatever it is that caused the 'break-up', was unavoidable or perhaps even was outside of their control.

The line "making islands where no islands should go" also emphasizes his disagreement with the distance that has happened.

"Most people were overjoyed" suggests that perhaps the relationship itself was unhealthy, for both of them and even for the people around them. The next line "they took to their boat" may also depict that other people were clueless of the sorrow and heartbreak he is facing.

I can relate very closely to the lyrics, as I have very recently had to move to another country for work, and I've left behind a woman whom I had a tacit relationship with - and although we both agreed it was for the best (as I had to leave to pursue a better future for my career), I still feel like I need her so much closer.

Death Cab for Cutie had basically written a song for the soundtrack of my life right now.

The Neighbourhood – Sweater Weather Lyrics 8 years ago
@[tinabinga:6606] Agree with your interpretation, but let me embellish by including my own thoughts.

IMO, this is a very dark, very typical "masculine" song. The singer of the song is a MAN, he wants to conquer the world and he does not have much thought for anything else. But he "adores" this woman who his "heart beats hardest for", and although he can't offer her his "sweater" (metaphor for his heart), he wants her to put her hands in his sleeves (a brief affair, or a tryst).

"Let's have an adventure; head in the clouds, but my gravity's centered" – means he wants to have an affair/relationship with this woman, and he's high off their relationship, but still he is grounded enough to not let their relationship sway him from his goals: to conquer the world.

The chorus presses on the fact that he sees their relationship as a sexual thing. They are both driven by sex – "She knows what I think about, and what I think about's 'one love, two mouths, one love, one house, no shirt, no blouse, just us". The next line confirms that he is emotionally cold, and does not want to talk about anything personal: "You'll find out nothing that I really wanna tell you about"

The next verse also highlights their strictly sexual relationship: "If I may just take your breath away, I don't mind if there's not much to say, sometimes the silence guides our minds, so move to a place so far away" And the next lines, as they say it, is history.

"Inside this place is warm, outside it starts to pour" I believe illustrates the dark, gloomy, rainy, nature of this song. – The first line refers to how happy he feels with the woman in the house (where they are having sex), but outside it's raining.

Snow Patrol – This Isn't Everything You Are Lyrics 9 years ago
If that second verse, or at least the line “And you wish you'd never met” was removed, I swear this would be the perfect song to portray an egotistical person who has an estranged, detached relationship with their ailing father, possibly from a young age, and finally learning that he has died, and starts to crumble. This song is intended to bring the person up, and not give up:

“You can’t find the phone so you can call it off
But it might be for the best
You can’t walk away, anyway
Cause you’ve nowhere else to go”

Very direct, the person cannot find a phone so they can’t call the funeral off. But it’s for the best that they go through with the funeral because there’s nowhere to run away to. The last line “Cause you’ve nowhere else to go” may also suggest that the person may feel like they don’t have anyone to share their feelings with after this has happened (because no one knows he knows his father).

“Is he worth all this, is it a simple yes
Cause if you have to think, it’s fucked
Feels like you’ve loved him more than he loved you
And you wish you’d never met"

Is the person caring for his father worth it, because it had always felt like the person loved the father more than the father loved the person. Then came the line that vetoes my whole interpretation.

“You’ve been up all night, and the night before
And you’ve lost count of the drinks and time
And your friends keep calling, worried sick
And there’s strangers everywhere”

The person has been having sleepless nights, and has been drinking endlessly to get themselves through it. The line "And your friends keep calling, worried sick" suggests the person's friends do not know that the person's father has died, or maybe was never aware that the person had a father or knew his father. And when the person disappears off the chart and returns to his hometown, his friends keep calling to ask him where he is. The line “And there’s strangers everywhere” suggests also that the person has never been involved with their father’s life, so when all calls probably from the father’s friends and relatives come, wanting to get confirmation or send condolences, they are unsure who they are speaking to. Also, the line may also suggest that this is a foreign feeling, and they have never had to deal with the death of a closed one before, so the “strangers” would refer to the undertaker, the funeral director, and so on and forth.

“And in one little moment, it all implodes
This isn’t everything you are”
Breathe deeply in the silence, no sudden moves
This isn’t everything you are”

After bottling up their emotions for so long, the person finally breaks down. “This isn’t everything you are” is the singer trying to tell the person that they are stronger than this, and they must not lose it. It also suggests that since the person has never had a close relationship with the father, mourning him was something that he never thought he would ever do.

“Just take the hand that’s offered and hold on tight
This isn’t everything you are
There’s joy not far from here right, I know there is
This isn’t everything you are”

This is telling the person to accept emotional support from whoever it is that’s offering, and “hold on tight”, because eventually, they will come to terms with it, and the sun and happiness will return.

“When you took the call, how could you know
That he’d slipped away last night
And you wish you’d went home days ago
To say goodbye or just hello”

This verse strengthens my interpretation. “The call” refers to the call from the police or the hospital telling the person that the father has died the night before. And the next verse explains how the person feels they should’ve gone home to visit the father the days before, to say a final goodbye or just a simple hello.

I swear, the first time I heard this song, I thought it was written for the Alice in Wonderland soundtrack, but for some reason didn't make the cut into the Almost Alice album.

Muse – Hate This and I'll Love You Lyrics 11 years ago
This is a very misguided song in my interpretation. I think this may be a song mostly directed to God, spoken by the Devil.

"Oh I am growing tired
Of allowing you to steal
Everything I have"

In the Old Testament, God banishes the Devil from Heaven after he tempted Adam and Eve into eating a forbidden fruit. The Devil is then cast out of Heaven for refusing to acknowledge Adam as a more superior being.

"You're making me feel
Like I was born to service you
But I am growing by the hour"

The Devil feels like he was created to service God, but his influence throughout mankind is growing by the hour.

"You left us far behind
So we all discard our souls
And blaze through your skies
So afraid to die"

This part's a bit hazy, but I think by "you", he is referring to God and all the other angels in Heaven. By "us", he is referring to all the sinners on Earth. He is saying because God left the Devil and humans behind, they will rebel, and sin ("blaze through your skies"). I'm not sure about the last line, but it would make more sense if it's "So UNafraid to die."

"Cause I was born to destroy you
I am growing by the hour
I'm getting strong in every way"

Again, he is clarifying that the Devil was created to oppose (destroy) God and goodness, and he is getting more and more influential in every way.

"You led me on
You led me on"

I think this is from (Adam and) Eve's point of view. Coincidentally, when these words were said, Matt uses his higher-pitched voice. The "You" refers to the Devil. The Devil tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit.

"Oh, I'm getting strong in every way"

This is the Devil's reponse to Eve.

Muse – Apocalypse Please Lyrics 11 years ago
This song mocks the belief that there is an apocalypse. Matt is saying, "With all the shit that's happening in the world, it's time for the apocalypse. You've been saying it'll happen, so let it happen."

"Declare this an emergency
Come on and spread a sense of urgency
And pull us through
And pull us through"

I think he is directing this to religion extremists who believe they are leaders of the world. He is telling them, "The current state of the world we live in calls for the apocalypse. Since you've been telling us all that it'll happen, help us through it." Declare this an emergency, come on and spread a sense of urgency – he is telling them to make it official the world is ending, seeing as they are influential people in the world.

"And this is the end
This is the end
Of the world"

I've come to understand that this repeated chorus is Matt mocking the belief that the apocalypse will happen. He's saying "this", what's happening in the world now, is the apocalypse we've been warned about.

"It's time we saw a miracle
Come on it's time for something biblical
To pull us through
To pull us through"

In the first line, Matt's saying it's time God proves His existence. Time for God to show a "miracle" (i.e. something that is impossible, in Matt's belief). In the rest of the verse, Matt is mocking the lessons God has taught us, saying it's time for His teachings to help us though the apocalypse.

"Proclaim eternal victory
Come on and change the cause of history
And pull us through
And pull us through"

If the apocalypse is to happen, then God has proclaimed eternal victory over the non-believers. Matt is urging God to do it, to prove him wrong and to end history. "And pull us through" in this verse is a bit confusing, but I suppose it could be Matt asking God to help the non-believers through it anyway.
