I dunno this may be weird but i interpret the song as being about swinging or a swinging house "roadhouse". Just some lines in the song that really show this "ashen lady give up your vows" he's telling the woman not to commit to a marriage and have sex. "you gotta roll roll roll you gotta thrill my soul all right" Telling accept his desires (sex) All the other lyrics i still think have this interpretation on them Anyway this is just my interpretation of the song |

| Does anybody spot the double meaning of the title lyric "everybody hurts" it can mean two things it can mean that everbody can cause you pain or it could mean everyone experiences pain and suffering like you. I'd really like to know which meaning micheal stipe would prefer us to interpret it as. | |

I think that this song is about the concept of cryonics (preservtion of people after they have died, so that they can be brought back to life in the future). The term "airbag" is a metaphor for the concept of preservation of humans in cryonics(they are put into a "airbag" to be preserved for the future). phrases like "in a deep deep sleep of the innocent, I am born agian". This means that these people will not be alive for a long period of time and will be "sleeping" basicaly "dead" and then be suddenly alive. Other phases such as "in the next world war", "i am born agian" they will be born again in the "next world war" the future "in an intersteller burst i am back to save the universe" the use of cryonics the people dont realise it put years have drifted away and then they are back. I think you get the idea how this song relates to this theory |
