Paul Simon – You Can Call Me Al Lyrics

My sixth grade students were studying song lyrics as a form of poetry. When we were trying to interpret this song, a usually silent and not particularly academic young man said, "It's about a man who is lonely and confused. He proceeded to explain how many of the lyrics supported his idea. That was a little over 25 years ago and I'll never forget it. It was my first inkling that, as a teacher, I needed to look beyond pencil and paper to find my students' gifts. Thank you, Chad. |

The Mamas & the Papas – California Dreamin' Lyrics

I always thought this was a lovely song, but having visited Santa Barbara (from Illinois), several times, the song speaks to me. It's beautiful, haunting, and captures a longing that having been there, I always have a dream of going back. As my seventy year old former Rosie the Riveter mother said as we traveled south from LA to SB along the coast, "What a great big beautiful country!" Seventy years old and California had the ability to move her. Beautiful. |

Bob Seger – Night Moves Lyrics

Aah, like for so many of you, this song makes me homesick for what is no longer there - mom and dad, home, high school, gravel roads, my (ahem) high school sweetheart. A moment in time, captured beautifully. |

Old Crow Medicine Show – Wagon Wheel Lyrics

Lawdy, to this midwesterner, this may be the best song ever! The harmonies and instrumentation are beautiful. I really admire the abiding love and loyalty many southerners feel for their home; this song expresses that feeling beautifully. Hope OCMS continues to rock me like wagon wheel for many years to come. Love it! |
