alt-J – Left Hand Free Lyrics 9 years ago
I picture talking to someone planning suicide with a gun. Gun in a right hand but the left hand free. That makes me think of the left hand as free will to stay thier right hand. Maybe the issue is over a girl.

However after hearing the 40s song in a speakeasy that certainly works :-)

Kongos – Come With Me Now Lyrics 10 years ago
To me the basic idea is someone so set in thier ways and too into thier head but very much wanting, or tempted by, the thought of just freeing themselves. Sounds like they want that change but are unsure if they can just move and get out of their own thoughts. Or if they're just too old.

After reading some of the comments I can see how this is such a great song. It speaks to us differently, depending on our perspectives. Some of the comments where how I viewed at different times in my life.
It's certainly about the tough situation of trying to deal with others. For me I see it as perfect for the online communities or even in person where people are trying, wanting to connect with someone in someway but can't. Either they never knew how or perhaps after a 'failed' long term relationship feel insecure. Kind of like some Dar Williams where the singer feels insecure till see realizes everyone is feeling like her, all doubting.
It certainly fits where there is something between you and another but don't know, or wont admit, what is means. Like the comments on the trans/prostitute/etc workers/clients where there's maybe a connection thats taboo. Or simply when you like someone but can't say it to them.
It's like all the wonderful songs that help us see and maybe understand something that might be obvious but we don't know how to proccess it without a narritive to help us along :-)

Mumford & Sons – Roll Away Your Stone Lyrics 12 years ago
Like many have pointed out artists want you to interpret the song in a personal way. As with the Darkness in the song our experiences dominate what we see and how we choose to use such things.
To me it's about someone who discovers the need to finally roll his stone away. To own up to all he is and has done to himself and others. To find hes been filling myself with things unreal and thus is never been at peace. And has only chipped away at who he really is.
The darkness is initially thinking he's ( other's ? ) been too harsh on himself but finds that is what he's grounding in.
The stars I feel are destiny. To say I choose to no longer live by 'my stars', to be acted upon, to react. Instead I put my stake in the ground and finally know where I stand, for better or worse.
The last is just being willing to fight for what is right, to hold your own soul and no longer hand everything over to things outside of yourself.

Finally It's a beutiful song. ( If this post wrong again sorry, new here )
