I have read The Stranger and didn't see many parallels between it and Bohemian Rhapsody. I absolutely believe most of Bohemian Rhapsody was not inspired by it.
And Freddie Mercury (then Farrokh Balsara) was born in Zanzibar and grew up there and in India (moving to Britain when he was 17). He never lived in Zimbabwe. |

Colin Moulding (the writer of the song) says the song is imagined about someone in the 'grim 70's'. The Nigel character is partly himself. Nigel is being channelled into a future he doesn't want but is too to speak out against. 'Nigel is not outspoken But he likes to speak And loves to be spoken to' just means the character is shy. |

Although Jeux Sans Frontiers the competition show was meant to be amusing and a good natured knock-about it often played out national rivalry as competitors from one country strained to outdo the other country (the same component of human nature that can result in war)- all while dressed in over-size ridiculous costumes (military and war leaders dress up in costumes (uniforms)). In a way it was like a bizarre art metaphor describing the dark farce that war/conflict is.
War is a 'game without frontiers' - a state that unleashes behaviour that goes beyond any normal boundary to limitless extremes. |

'high precision ghosts' refers to old songs being re-released on the 'precision' format of CD. The character in the song is clearly an aged rock n' roll star who is being irked by being reminded of his once glory days by his back catalogue being released again (probably on cheap compilations) on what was a new format when this song was written. He regrets that he now is alone when he once had many pretty hangers on surrounding him.
The nonsense words are the sorts of throwaway lyrics that the character sings in his hits.
He was once called a king of rock n' roll but that is an ironic memory now that he cuts a figure so in contrast to the strutting youth he once was. |

Dadd wrote a commentary on his painting called 'Elimination of a picture and its subject - called the feller's master stroke'. It is from that the characters mentioned in the song are taken - for examples: 'To assist This gandy long legged trumpeter A tatterdemalion & a junketer', 'In soldier and Sailor, tinker or tailor ploughboy Apothecary, thief', 'The Politician next, with senatorial pipe', 'Some fairy dandy. Making a break As sweet as candy. To faery nymph Like him so quaint', 'You’ll not inform that fay, that under the leg Of one of those maids, behind his Back. A satyr peeps', 'The ostler from the fairy inn Knowing his air, the curate of the trim Hands to his knees and body bent' etc.
