Beach House – Myth Lyrics 11 years ago
As much as I know akito_on means well, at the end of the day do what you need to do to grieve. I have lost close people to me, and in my experience the grieving process is different for each person. It is too easy to suggest just get over it and move on. When you lose someone close, it shakes up your world forever.

I pray and hope the best for you. I hope through it all you can make your boyfriend proud of the person you will become. Good luck and God bless.

Beach House – Myth Lyrics 11 years ago
Man I love this song and it came at the right moment in my life.

So much of life is built on myths. We build our lives based on what we are told is "Truth". In reality they are merely truths with a small 't'. But as people we need myths. We need myths to define our existence, to define why we chose to turn right instead of left, or to understand why we are who we are. People ultimately come to embrace myths in order to survive.

Now for me personally, I need to see the truth to my own myths. At this moment, I am questioning the notion of choosing my career path of pursuing a Ph.D. I've come to find that maybe this path I chose for myself is all a myth. All the glorious anecdotes describing "living the life of the mind" is just nothing more than a myth. Why? Many of my friends who only graduated with a BAs are living fruitful lives that are not consumed with stress, with insecurities, fears for future employment, politics that rival the Roman Empire, and anything else that comes the academy. Unlike me, they don't feel guilty on the weekends for sleeping in, but instead are able to spend time for themselves and their family -- which I have put off to follow this myth. Thus, the song has helped me to see the road I'm on: It is the one that slides down my cheek as I write.

Btw, I love the lyric, "help me to name it." The only way we are able to make sense of the myth is through the people we trust, love, and/or respect. These people are able to help us to name the "myth," to name the choices we made so that we may be able to see it more clearer or let it fade away into the ether it spawned from.

Hell of a song. Thanks Beach House!

"Although our minds are free to dream and have ideas to live by (the change in the title's hand) life's obligations and limitations curb them down until all is left is material considerations (the broken phone)"

So True!!!

So true. As a Ph.D. student now contemplating his future outside of academia, I tried to believe that self-actualization would somehow lead me to better pastures. But in reality, it is no better than living a life of a slave. It just comes with a nice title...

Time is all we have and is the most valuable resource, as you say, we are given. I learned that right after my dad passed away. Nothing can give you time back. Nothing. As I spend the entire day engulfed in work and school, I realize how nothing can be worth more than time with the people you love.

So like in the film Trainspotting, choose life. That is all we really have.

Belle & Sebastian – A Summer Wasting Lyrics 12 years ago
This song for me is my time in grad school. You come off a horrific year full of stress and chaos, locked up in a room staring at a computer screen or reading your hundredth book you have to complete by the end of the day -- or even spending all night grading just so students can post something ridiculous on RateMyProfessor.com.

With that, most people expect you to continue doing almost the same drivel into the summer -- for publications and to "live the life of the mind." But this song is me resisting the calls to further inoculate myself and just live life. Even though they would all see me as "wasting" away my free-time doing whatever I felt like, in the end I know like in the song it is not wasting but living.

Life is so short. When I was my father's caregiver while he was dying of cancer, you realize that life is to be experienced and there is nothing wrong with that. I love this song because when life gets overwhelming, and boy does it, I know that when I am "wasting" I am actually doing something beneficial for myself and the people I love.

"But if the summer's wasted
How come that I could feel so free"

Stavesacre – Sundown Motel Lyrics 12 years ago
The song appears for me to about leaving a church that has disappointed the narrator and he needs to comfort a friend who is experiencing the same disappointment. For instane he hates how his friends forces a smile like sometimes we do with fellow parishioners even though we are broken inside. We do this constantly in church trying not to show our weaknesses so that people won't judge us. Instead of realizing that God does his best in us when we are at our weakest (see 2 Cor. 12), people assume we are sinners.

Also, they say they hate our darkness but we'll say we hate their half-light referencing Rev. in which Jesus talks about lukewarm Christians. They don't like how different they are. As Derrida noted, people are constantly trying to center us. And if we deviate from the norm, people judge us and assume the worst. But in all actuality they are merely follow the herd mentality like Nietzsche referenced in his work. Sleepwalkers referencing the people who come every sunday morning with only their bodies but no heart. They just sleepwalk through life and in their faith as well. They think by coming to church they are somehow analogous to Christ and his ministry. However, they don't understand that faith goes beyond going to church every weekend.

Basically their time is ending at this church and they know it. With all the crappy things church is saying and doing against homosexuals, immigrants, the poor, etc., this song challenges the church's distance from Christ and his ultimate intention for his Church. This song ultimately is telling disappointed Christians who are struggling in church to look for something better. Thus, when the sun begins to set, realize it and leave so you can ultimately find a better one in which God will shine his morning light upon our souls.

Great song. Has been great for my faith!

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Windmills Lyrics 12 years ago
For me this song is about as much as we chase dreams and the desires that may or may not come to fruition, in the end whatever life brings is a blessing. "Maybe anyway the wind blows, is all worth waiting for, anyway the wind blows." I think he realizes that after chasing fantasies like Don Quixote, he discovers that what he already has is what life is ultimately about. The journey is what makes life fulfilling rather than always trying to manipulate life to suit us -- "water to repair what we have broken."

So we spend too much time chasing windmills, but it's time to go home and be with the ones we love. Because in the end that's all we have. Maybe anyway life takes us is special and worth living for rather than always being focused on the future where life may never be fulfilled.
