Billy Idol – Don't Need A Gun Lyrics 4 years ago
This is a sad song about the death of popular musicians, such as Elvis Presley, Johnnie Ray, and Gene Vincent, who were killed by something different from a gunshot. In effect: Elvis Presley died from a heart failure, in presence of drugs intoxication; Johnnie Ray died from complications of liver failure; Gene Vincent died from a ruptured stomach ulcer. The final part of the song is particularly bitter, because it suggests that an artist can be considered a human being only after death. So, perhaps, it's one of the saddest songs I've heard, although with the rhythm at 139 BPM. Fast rhythms can fool you.

The Psychedelic Furs – Dumb Waiters Lyrics 6 years ago
I agree with Mr. Shatter, the lyrics sound like the words of a paranoid on dope, alone in his room of hell. I particularly appreciate the slow, simple, and hypnotic melody, with the rhythm at 75,5 BPM, surely suitable to heavy metal. Differently from heavy metal, this song is based on a refined linguistic ambivalence. By one side, it appears as an adaptation of "The Dumb Waiter", by Harold Pinter, one-act play written in 1957, where the word "waiter" is related to food. The mysterious and dark atmosphere seems to be the same. To the other side, I think that the band also wanted to describe a peculiar point of view, of a kind of man waiting for "paper" as a corrispective of his "dumb" activity, in fear of "Mrs. London" and his "son". The type of man of the song wants all your "paper", of course money, partly to buy a "gun" (personal defence) and a "train" (way to escape). Who is he? Possibly a drug dealer, given that in London the narcotic police (the "son") belongs to the City administration ("Mrs. London").In one word, the song is
"fantastic", even if a little bit devilish.

The Beatles – Strawberry Fields Forever Lyrics 6 years ago
I don’t know how many persons can agree, perhaps a few, however this song seems to be the criticism of a movie. The two fundamental words of the lyrics are “cranberry sauce”, recalling the Christmas period in the UK, and also a slang insult in the USA. In brief, something completed in December 1966 in the USA was extremely disgusting to John Lennon, who wrote this song to criticize it. I think it was the movie “Hallucination Generation”, directed by Edward Mann.

Ram Jam – Black Betty Lyrics 6 years ago
As written in many other interventions, the song is a rock version of a 1939 blues by Leadbelly. The Ram Jam version has simplified lyrics, however, still conserving the core of the original song. I think that the 1939 version contains many autobiographical elements, sadly Leadbelly’s biography is extremely complicated, and various sources are contradictory. In brief, in my opinion Leadbelly wanted to sing about his second daughter, conceived with Margaret Coleman. For a long time he had denied the paternity, until the day he finally admitted it, then explained his vision of the facts into “Black Betty”. It is true that the “black-painted musket” can be a type of shot weapon, but in American slang the word musket also means “occasion in which the condom slips off while having sex with a girl, unbeknownst to both partners”. No condoms around 1905-1916? False, in the years 1900-1920 condoms were chiefly produced in Germany, and imported in USA. I suggest to Anglo-Saxon lovers of blues to deepen Leadbelly’s biography, ‘cause it’s interesting and emblematic. Due to my actual level of English, for me it’s a mission excessively hard.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Jubilee Street Lyrics 8 years ago
I don't know how many pop musicians can write a beautiful, interesting and intelligent song on a public library. Nick Cave was able to do that, in a very amazing way. This song is about Bee, that is an old brownfield site in Brighton UK, which was regenerated through a private finance initiative of £50 million, in order to obtain a fantastic public library. Notoriously, in Brighton there's a relevant Russian community, and many natives know Russian language. Nick Cave visited the library, and has become enthusiast about it. However, he was a little bit sorry, because at the library - baby boogie - all of his songs were on the little
black book (black list), therefore it was not possible for babies to listen to them. From my point of view (disco DJ), the song is precious, because it goes from 76,5 to 94 BPM. In conclusion, I hope it will enter into baby boogie service, also in memory of Nick's dead son.

Maxwell – Ascension Lyrics 8 years ago
Although the song is excellent, its commercial success was provoked by the misunderstanding of the lyrics. The music contains strong gospel tunes and was recorded in 1995. Maxwell is a native New Yorker, deeply influenced by 70s soul classics, especially the falsetto of Marvin Gaye, and I think that he conceived "ascension" for an uncommon partner, hypothetically sent to him by the Highest of the High. On the 31st of May 1996, the popular father of psychedelia, Timothy Leary, died, and so someone had the brilliant idea to realease "ascension (don't ever wonder)" as a single, done on the 30th of July 1996. This single was immediatly interpreted as a satire about Leary, and its gospel tunes as comical. As you can see, it is not always the Highest of the High to determine the success of soul songs, but sometimes the Lowest of the Low.

Sade – Smooth Operator Lyrics 9 years ago
I'm Italian, and for me it was hard to understand what this song is about. The gigolo theory is unbelievable, because an operative gigolo can't be "smooth", and one gigolo can't place "high stakes" (plural). Of course, one high stake each time!
The viagra theory is interesting, but the lyrics were written in 1982, before the commercialization of viagra. In my opinion, the song inspired the name of a music band, the "Dysfunctional Psychedelic Waltons". Yes, because I think that it is about the typical erectile dysfunctions caused by amphetamines.

New Order – Blue Monday Lyrics 9 years ago
I think that in many comments there is a good description of the true spirit of the song, that is a feeling of domination/alienation provoked by someone/something. What is it? First of all, the inspiration for the title came from “goodbye blue Monday”, which was the invention of washing machine for housewives; the song title tell us that we are not equal to housewives, or happy to have a washing machine. Also the lyrics of the song describe a certain misfortune with a water metaphor (ship in the harbor, walked down to the beach). In my opinion this misfortune is the “heart grow cold”. What kind of cold heart can make us feel as we had seasickness? In conclusion, I see that the song is not only excellent, but also really original, because it is a rare criticism of recreational use of amphetamines.

Led Zeppelin – All My Love Lyrics 10 years ago
I think the comprehension of these lyrics may save people’s life. In brief, this is what can help us:
1) the song is also a tribute to Robert Plant’s son Karac Pendra, who died in July 1977 when he was 5;
2) Karac’s death was caused by enteritis virus infection, possibly taken from his mother Maureen Wilson, who had become ill a week before;
3) Maureen Wilson was born in Kolkata India, and she was the “proud Aryan”;
4) in peculiar hypothesis, enteritis may come from bursitis, for example after certain injections;
5) Robert Plant’s love had three parts, his wife, his son, and the “cloak of delight”;
6) it seems that Plant stopped drugs starting from the death of his son Karac (for me it’s true).
Now you can also understand the reasons why after Karac’s death Robert Plant felt as bad as to wish to leave the Led Zeppelin. In conclusion, “all my love” is a sad song, full of remorse and regret, but a great song. Think about this, maybe it can save your life.

John Lee Hooker – Boom Boom Lyrics 10 years ago
The story of the waitress/bartender seems strange to me. John Lee Hooker arrived in Detroit in
1943, and that year he married two women, Alma Hopes and Sarah Jones. In late 1944, he married the sixteen year old Maude Mathis by whom he had 5 children, and with whom he remained for 25 years until 1969. The woman at the bar, according to some is called Willa, Willow according to others, and still others say Luilla. What is strange is that around 1961, or when the song was released, at the home of John there was almost a crowd: his wife and 5 children. Could John take home also Willa/Willow/Luilla? In my opinion "boom boom" is a classic of blues, and inspired the infamous reggae chart Snow - informer. Snow made a discussed parody while singing
"a licky boom boom down".

Roxy Music – Avalon Lyrics 10 years ago
I agree this song is sexy. It was included in the namesake lp, released in May 1982. In my opinion it is about how in 1981 Bryan Ferry loved at first sight the 21 year-old aristocratic model Lucy Helmore. Miss Helmore posed for the cover art of the album “Avalon”, wearing a medieval helmet. The song tells us that Bryan saw Lucy’s moves, as beautiful and communicative as bossanova steps, and he was kidnapped by her motion. She was more attractive than “the party”, and led him to marriage on the 26th of June 1982. In this case “Avalon” means aristocratic. Sadly the album included also the song “the main thing”; in fact, the main thing was Mrs. Helmore’s most dangerous enemy. However, I love both the songs, and for this I apologize to Mrs. Helmore.

Led Zeppelin – Heartbreaker Lyrics 10 years ago

I can’t agree “it’s obvious what the song is about”, because almost all of the comments are on women or whores. As somebody wrote, the song is rock and blues, consequently woman has to be intended as personal bad habit and not person. Remembering that the Led Zeppelin were from UK, I observe that in UK and in the late 60s the most abused substance was methamphetamine. In fact “Annie” is a slang term for anhydrous ammonia, which was used in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamine. According to UK laws, meth was sold only under prescription, and this was the reason for the high price of illegal meth, such as the popular “purple heart” pills. So “Annie” was a heartbreaker, also because methamphetamine is toxic for the human heart. Listening to their music, we can understand that the band Led Zeppelin didn’t like meth and preferred the drugs of black people (opium, cannabis, and so on). To conclude, in my opinion the song “heartbreaker” is a masterpiece, and true women are not as bad as many people are thinking.

Toto – Georgy Porgy Lyrics 10 years ago
I think that when a rock song contains some nursery rhymes, often its topic is a psychoactive substance (if you can't believe it, I suggest you the lp Genesis "nursery cryme"). In this case, I can remember that many singers need remedies against bad breath. Bad breath may be caused by smoking and drinking abuses. The author of the lyrics of "georgy porgy" was Steve Lukather, who learned transcendental meditation and some elements of traditional Ayurvedic medicine. In my opinion "contemplation" is for "rumination", or chewing something. What? In traditional Ayurvedic medicine,
chewing areca nut and betel leaf is just a remedy against bad breath. Betel nuts "kissed the girls", or they reduced the effects of smoking and drinking (like in blues music, girl = personal habit), and so gave power to the voice (make them cry). Betel nuts also "made them high", because they induce euphoria. The phrase "Not the only one that holds you" is simple to explain, in fact betel nuts are the fourth most abused substance in the world. To conclude, "georgy porgy" is an excellent song, lyrics included.

The Who – Pinball Wizard Lyrics 10 years ago
I was a true pinball lover (the game machine), and I can't remember pinball smell. I
couldn't find anything about that smell. By association of ideas, the sentence "always gets
a replay never tilts at all" I did come to mind the motto "turn on tune in drop out", and
the sentence "bally table king" I did come to mind the phrase "jelly roll king". I observe
that in this wonderful song we can also hear "pin ball" (needle "ball"?), "buzzers and
bells" (dazed and busted people ?), and "wizard" (the "Wiz of Oz" was back popular in
the psychedelic era). In every case, I've never played with a pinball machine like this.
However, I simply adore the song, because of its blues roots. Maybe the smell of "pin ball"
is something like vinegar. Elton John's cover is excellent too.

Ray Charles – I Got A Woman Lyrics 10 years ago
The woman of the song is peculiar, because she stays at home and has money to give
without being a professional lover. I think that this kind of woman was really the best
long-term mate for Ray Charles (please read his biography). She was the brown girl. In my
opinion the song is excellent thanks to the great Ray (the best artist to sing it), and a
little shocking when it says "she gives me money when I'm in need". So you can find more
truth in it than in the newspapers.

Bruce Springsteen – Bobby Jean Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is "strange". People say that it is dedicated to Steven Van Zandt, but I see
a couple of problems. Bruce is born on the 23rd of September 1949, and Steven on the
22nd of November 1950, so they couldn't be seventeen at the same time. Bruce knew Steven in 1968, when Bruce was 19 and Steven 18. I also observed that the song seems to be sad, maybe too sad for a simple change of guitarist (in fact Steven came back to E Street Band in 1999). The charm of "Bobby Jean" comes from the ambiguity of the lyrics, because it does not leave out if the protagonist is a man or woman, and whether alive or dead. Maybe Bruce wanted to be ironic, and also wanted to take advantage of the great success of Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean". It's an example of the advertising technique to confuse a new product with another widespread. The same idea came later to David Bowie, who released in September 1984 the song "blue jean". In 2006 Fatboy Slim resurrected the idea, recording "that old pair of jeans". Money does not stink.

Adam Ant – Ants Invasion Lyrics 11 years ago
When I first read these lyrics, I thought that “ant” was for “anthelmintic”. The most famous “ant” is the benzylpiperazine (BZP), which is used to obtain a legal alternative to ecstasy better known as “party pills”. The problem is that the recreational use of piperazine begun in the early nineties, and not in 1980. Reading Goddard’s biography I could understand that this song is autobiographical, because in the mid seventies Goddard tried to do a suicide by taking all the pills he could find in his mother-in-law's kitchen cabinet. Probably among those pills there were especially anthelmintic drugs. On the other hand, perhaps the song “ants invasion” was a precognition of the “party pills”.

Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 11 years ago
Is it really possible disrupt the brains of millions of Americans by the media subliminal ? I don’t know, but it seems to me that the question is not important to explain the success of the song by the Green Day. This song is great, because it forces the listener to think, "I like the song, because I'm not an idiot like the others.". I think it’s idiot to feel idiot without a good reason. The problem is that a real idiot is not able to understand the reason for which is idiot. In any case, the invocation of the idiocy of the Americans could turn a miserable and trivial piece of punk in a worldwide success. Isn’t it idiot ? Certainly, but it is good to be idiot, if you are happy. Of course it's idiotic to click on the button +1 for this view, but if you don’t click it you can’t be happy.

Spencer Davis Group – I'm A Man Lyrics 11 years ago
In my opinion this song was inspired by “Bo Diddley — I’m a man”. Diddley sung about
the “line to shoot” (cocaine), and said that a “man” had enough money to get it. The
song by Spencer Davis Group is about a “groovy kind of stuff” that needs naked skin
(“whiskers on my chin”) to be injected (heroin). The lyrics also says that a man has
enough courage to do the injection, that someone likes more the “stuff” than the cat
(amphetamines) and the chatter (cocaine), and that the injections keep the “toilet
trimmed with chrome” (allow to maintain good health). Something more about two cover
versions of I’m a man by Spencer Davis Group. The first was released in 1969 by the
band Chicago, and is slower and more danceable. The lyrics of the 1969 track are
just a little bit different, but their meaning is the same. The second cover version
is from Italy, and was released in 1978 by Marzio Vincenzi (alias Macho). The lyrics
of this 1978 vinyl are almost the same of the original version by Spencer Davis Group,
but there is an important difference : instead of “toilet trimmed with chrome”, Marzio
Vincenzi said “toilet trimmed with gold”. So I think that Marzio didn’t understand the
meaning of the lyrics, because normally a man addicted to heroin doesn’t have “gold”
or a lot of money. In summary, please don’t care about the (very bad) meanings,
because “I’m a man” is always good music.

The Beatles – Penny Lane Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is an example of the extraordinary skill of the Beatles to say terrible things
without causing any scandal. Around 1967 Penny Lane was a bus stop in Liverpool UK. Was it a wonderful bus stop ? No, of course. "Penny Lane" sounded very similar to "Perry Lane", the place in Palo Alto CA where Ken Kesey lived and made his famous parties when he was at Stansford University. Ken Kesey is also famous all over the world for his magic bus named "Further". The Beatles wanted to celebrate Ken Kesey's bus stops ; the problem was that the lsd was declared illegal in USA in 1966, and the celebration couldn't be openly done.

Little Feat – Willin' Lyrics 11 years ago
It seems that Lowell George was fired from the Mothers Of Invention by Frank Zappa because of the lyrics of this song. Why ? I propose my theory. Maybe "Alice" is Vincent Damon Furnier, alias Alice Cooper. Frank Zappa was an idol for Furnier, also because Frank helped him to achieve success. Perhaps the song "willin'" says a little more. There are two expressed alliterations of 4 words : 1) willin' - weed - whites - wine ; 2) Tucson (Arizona) - Tucumcari (New Mexico) - Tehachapi (California) - Tonopah (Nevada). In my opinion a third alliteration of 4 words is implicit in the lyrics : Frank (Zappa) - f****d - (his) friend - Furnier (Alice). And so Lowell George was fired for writing a wonderful song, while Frank went from Straight to Bizarre Records.

The B-52's – Rock Lobster Lyrics 11 years ago
It seems that the purple is an important color in psychedelic music. And it is so also for the variations of purple and
the purple objects. In the classical song "a whiter shade of pale" by the Procol Harum, the color purple is invoked with
the word "fandango", and the song talks about a strange party and a following nightmare in the sea. Also in the amazing
song "rock lobster" there is a strange party and a citation for the same color, obviously the "lobster", and finally there
is also another nightmare in the sea. Substantially, the contents of these different songs are very similar.
Why ? Because the two songs were about the effects of something that was purple and could shake minds like the waves of
the sea.To know more, I suggest a web search about "Augustus Owsley Stanley III".

The Beatles – Hey Bulldog Lyrics 12 years ago
In my opinion, the possible meaning of a 1968 "standard" song by John Lennon could be the
following one. The bulldog is a tenacious man who hasn't stopped following the guru T.L.,
also when the lsd has been declared illegal. He doesn't care about the "big man" (pusher)
who sells heroin in the park. The bulldog has only ten children (hippys), because the law
is against them. If I'm right, the bulldog was not Paul, but John himself.

The Chemical Brothers – The Golden Path Lyrics 12 years ago
After making a series of web searches,I knew that the Chemical Brothers loved science
fiction. Consequenty the "golden path" may be a term from Frank Herbert's fictional Dune
universe, referring to Leto Atreides II's strategy to prevent humanity's ultimate
destruction. The strategy involved "the spice",a valuable substance (drug) called melange
that gave to the people all of their skills and extended life and some prescient awareness.
Dune novel was pubished in 1965, the year following the release of dr Timothy Leary's "the
psychedelic experience" which contained a similar path (concerning LSD). In my opinion
the song by the Chemical Brothers talks about the path proposed by Leary. Leary surely took
something from Aleister Crowley's books, and so the presence of the devil in "the
golden path" song seems appropriate. This song is very good, also because it leaves the
listener to wonder if the "golden path" is or is not the right one.

Fatboy Slim – Always Read the Label Lyrics 12 years ago
The song contains an excerpt of the lyrics from Ruben Blades - Pedro Navaja (lp siembra,
year 1978), naturally in spanish. This excerpt is : "la vida te da sorpresas, sorpresas
te da la vida, ay Dios", in English "life gives you surprises, surprises are given to you
by life, oh God".In the song by Ruben Blades, Pedro Navaja was a NYC pimp that people
believed dead ;on the contrary he was alive. The spoken spanish words explain the reason why
you must always read the label. In other words and according to Norman Cook's song (Fat
Boy Slim true name), you can take your pills, but following the instructions contained in
the "label".The idea (harm reduction) is both NTB, not the best and not too bad.

The Psychedelic Furs – Pretty in Pink Lyrics 12 years ago
When you're talking about rock music, the words "psychedelic" and "pink" don't have many
meanings, but I observe a couple of things more. Caroline sounds very close to
"care a line", or specific business support. What is the "side of our lifes..." ? In my
opinion it's our brain's memory. So, the song seems to talk about something pink of the
past times that was "pretty", alias "not expensive". To be more explicit, they hope
addiction cheaper. Normal for a (very good) punk band.

Procol Harum – A Whiter Shade of Pale Lyrics 12 years ago
In my opinion the two most important words of the song are "light fandango". At first I
thought about the spanish kind of dance, but it didn't make any sense. After accurate web
search, I knew that "fandango" can also be color fuchsia, the typical color of the LSD pills
that Ken Kesey gave to people during his notorious parties. In the Procol Harum's song
"light fandango" was a light dose of LSD, which led to the partygoers something similar
to being drunk ; but people asked for more (fandango-LSD),and so LSD hallucination began. In
this hallucination a young girl was captured by Neptune like she was a marmaid, and she was
driven to the ocean bed. It's the usual vision of death induced by the spoken substance. My
conclusion is great song, also because in 1967 only few pop musicians "dared" to fight
against LSD (to say the truth in this case we have a light fight). I'm from Italy, and I
have to say that in Italian web sites we can find some translations of "a whiter shade of
pale" that are really comical. Italian 1967 cover version of the song was "Dik Dik - senza
luce" (in English "alone at night"), good except for the lyrics (without rhyme).

Tim Hardin – If I Were A Carpenter Lyrics 12 years ago
Tim Hardin was handsome and addicted to heroin. It is known that his lookout for women was to steal their money for heroin. In 1965 he was in LA, where he knew tv actress Susan Yardley Morss. His following relationship with her was more important than usual. I think that the song "if I were a carpenter" means that without heroin he would never love Susan, and vice versa (carpenter is a man who repairs holes in wood, methaphor for heroin rehabilitation). From Susan side, attraction for weak
creatures is a typical feature of female sexuality. I'm Italian, but I have to say that the Italian song cover (Dik Dik - se io fossi un falegname) is a terrible metamorphosis of a wonderful song in the paracommunist manifesto.

Led Zeppelin – Whole Lotta Love Lyrics 12 years ago
The people who have remembered the blues roots of this rock masterpiece are right. I think that the "woman" of the song is a "personal mate" (drug habit), naturally a typical "mate" of black people, or the opium. In this case "love" means "zero", or the total absence of human passions that you can find in the book of the dead by Bardo Thodol. The song gives also suggestions about how to use the opium. The first is an injection (every inch...of the needle), and the second is smoking it (backdoor man is a poor black man who smokes the rest of the opium just smoked by another person). As a disco dj I suggest to prove a beatmix between Chicago south California purples (nostalgic ode to owsley acid) and Led Zeppelin whole lotta love (hymn to opium).
