Alice in Chains – No Excuses Lyrics 8 years ago
Looks like a lot of people don't think this is about drugs, but I do believe drug use has a huge role in it. I read somewhere before that Chris Cornell stated "Spoonman" was simply about a local man who played the spoons on the street. While that may not be entirely untrue, Cornell is way too good a lyricist and way too clever for it to *only* be about a homeless musician - especially given the title - and I believe that's also the case here with Cantrell.

Dissecting the lyrics and taking into consideration the timeline that this was written, this comes across as a song that the writer realizes he is on is a path of self-destruction and he must finally take real measures to get his life together, despite the fact that his close friend won't follow his lead and their paths will likely diverge (and probably in the near future). My guess is that the path referenced involved drugs and all the time spent away from home, which kept him constantly occupied both physically and mentally and unable to focus on much of anything else.

I find that this is a very "Rumours"-esque song in the sense that Cantrell and Staley would share vocals on a tune that is clearly about internal strife. But hey, all for the greater good I suppose.

@[alda:5626] It probably was, but to keep it radio-friendly (and since the two words sound so similar), they likely changed the lyrics so that no one could say otherwise

I've read that this is about Cornell feeling "outshined" by his deceased friend, Andrew Wood (singer of Mother Love Bone). Apparently Andrew was, in Cornell's opinion, a superior lyricist, vocalist and performer and this was a song to perhaps vent a little frustration about it but also maybe as a - somehow - humbling acknowledgement.
