It's a song about being sick of someone who's a bore and who no longer excites another. It's about stagnation and settleing and giving up. It's about the same ol' same ol' crap day in and day out under the guise of freedom; individualism; and fun. I like the song, but I don't live a boring life and never plan on living one. I wish I had even heard of Kurt when he was alive. The first I heard of him is when his suicide was announced to the world. Yup. Good song. I remember when a draft dodger who took off to Canada (and who was being prosecuted) came to my college campus to speak. (I suppose he was trying to gather support). It had been years since the war, but it had finally caught up with him. It must have been such a scary time for young men...wondering when you'd be called to risk your life for a cause you may or may not have supported. |

Glad you understood it because I was very confused. Love the artist, but this song is not one of his best. Too many assumptions made about 'welfare mothers'....lumping them altogether. Decades ago there were many negative assumptions made about divorcees...until the numbers skyrocked, and some of those being cruel found themselves divorced.... |

Truly fascinating, Tquinn554. I would like to believe that the artist (with whom I am not all that familiar unfortunately) thought of all mothers when she pieced together this song. Definitely references to Mary, but average mums across the planet share many characteristics with the Holy Mother....the nurturing; caring; love; support; dedication; loyalty; and almost always being the one to not only hold the family together, but to be there for everyone when it falls apart. It's an addictive song. And it's sad that there are so few comments for it. I guess that has to do with the age of the song and the age of the users of this site. This song was HUGE. Afterthought....You are probably too young to recall what was hitting the news at that time. At least in Florida, gay men were being busted what seemed left and right for having sex in public parks. There was even a big sting in the reststop just across the interestate near my employment; however, there appeared to be a rash of arrests nationwide at that time. I think it had more to do with the gay issue than it did the public exposure issue. |

I don't think it was his 'innocence" that had him avoid trial. Wasn't he caught by a cop? I may be incorrect, but I thought I recall reading that in the news. It's fascinating how he's making a comeback (poor choice of wording perhaps:). I was surprised to see his TV appearances...and the fact that he was dressed in his Pee Wee attire. Shocked, actually. I thought he would need to start fresh to succeed. I guess only time will tell. |

Your mama forgot the 'A' in your name ;) Just joshing you. I love the band (best debut album ever), but I don't care for the song. The lyrics are simple and poignant, but the "sound" of this song just doesn't sit right with me (nor left, for that matter. Arrr Arrrr Arrrr). I guess it just sounds boring to me. I would have preferred a more upbeat rhythm (did I spell THAT correctly?) to go with the feel of the lyrics. |

I do, too. I grew up with the band thanks to an older sibling. Creed, Bread, Johnny Winter, Barry Manilow (ugh) and Barbara Stisand (another ugh)were her favorites. AHHHHHHHHHHHH. Here we go again. First, if you're gonna talk about "religion" than your cute lil' arse better know something about it....MEANING, you are in church weekly or at least when good Catholics go...every Easter and Christmas;) Just because you went to church as a child and had crazy arsed parents who pushed fundamentalism does NOT mean you know about all faiths! Religion does not control. It provides the guidelines for living that Christ/God set in place. People choose their own churches; if they want to donate; if they even attend and when they attend; if they wish to stop going to church or change churches; etc. They also pick their volunteer work for the church (if any) and which teachings of God's they will follow. God's teachings may make us feel unholy' at times, but that's because as fallible humans we are bound to fall short on different issues and at different times in our lives. Geesh...whoever thought we humans were perfect? Religion (God) makes us feel GOOD about ourselves; our fellow man; and helping those less fortunate. ALL studies show that church going folk provide more humanitarian aide (donations) to the poor in this country and nationwide than atheists; secular humanists; or Christians who sit at home on Sundays. Your bias really does not mesh well with your level of intelligence. As for the song, the lyrics are wonderful. As for their meaning, I haven't a clue (as usual:) |
