Buzzcocks – I Don't Mind Lyrics 1 year ago
Actually the line is “something about you made me DOUBT you more.” It’s all about doubting someone’s love. Feeling you’re not good enough for them, no matter who you are or what you do.

The line I’m not sure of here is “this pathetic clown’ll keep hanging around,” I always thought it was “this pathetic clown WON’T keep hanging around.” In other words, if you keep treating me like shit I’m gonna leave. I hope that’s what Pete meant, as that’s what I feel about relationships like this. There’s only so much I can take no matter how great a person seems before I’m done and out. But if he was gonna stay no matter how badly he was treated, the songs even sadder and completely hopeless…and as a Pete Shelley Buzzcocks song that might be the whole point ! (But don’t become that pathetic clown yourself, people. This is a good lesson to learn for obsessed young lovers. Lol!)

The Smashing Pumpkins – 1979 Lyrics 1 year ago
@[Tig45:44792] thank you so much for this. I read this years ago, when you posted it. And now, years later as I relished to this brilliant album and prepare to see the Pumpkins again (or what’s left of them) at the Hollywood Bowl this month I re-read your beautiful words along with the song. So profound. I’m 59 years old, was a teen in 1979, which gives this song special meaning to me. I feel like it’s describing that actual year of my life, with all the stupid, exciting, hopelessly romantic things my friends and I were all doing back then every day. Trying to LIVE to the fullest. Trying to grab the stars. I still am now. Even though I’m far removed from my teens, I try hard not to lose that sense of excitement to be alive that this song evokes. And that your words inspire. We’re the same people inside, even as our bodies age, as long as we don’t forget who we are. This song help me remember. Rock on, everyone! Embrace it all.

The Cars – Good Times Roll Lyrics 12 years ago
Ok, I had to sign up for this forum just to post this. This is one of the simplest songs ever written, and the meaning is crystal clear. And it's certainly not about religion. It's about being in rock band, and the relationship between the rock stars and the rock and roll fans. Let the good times roll (at the concert), let them (the band) knock you around. Let them make you a clown (doesn't matter if you make a fool of yourself, either on stage or in the audience). Let them leave you up in the air (happy, excited, elated, high) let them brush your rock and roll hair! (how much more clear can this line be? grow your hair out and BE a rock star, or do the same and BE a super fan!)

Let the good times roll. (uhm, well, does this really need any explanation at all?)

And from the band's point of view: "Let the stories be told"...and "let the photos be bold." Let the media say or show whatever they want. It doesn't really matter. Don't let it get to you. Just keep on rocking and rolling, and having fun playing and listening to the music.

And from the fan's point of view: "If the illusion is real, let them be on your side." (embrace the illusion that is a rock and roll show.) If they've got thunder appeal (if the band's nice and loud and sexy), let them be on your side. Or from the rock stars point of view, this can be about the audience being on THEIR side. Thunder appeal can be equally the loud rock and roll music, or the thunderous applause from the fans. But if the illusion (of rock and roll stardom, which is really mostly style, attitude and swagger, as much as it is musicianship) feels real, go with it. Believe it for the moment. Enjoy yourself on stage and in the audience, and let the good times roll.

Super simple, perfect rock and roll song. Rock on, everybody!
