Modest Mouse – Other People's Lives Lyrics 11 years ago
I can't stress enough how fantastically clever the structure of the song is.
I think the most important part, which explains why he's out on the road alone, is lost, intentionally (by Brock), among the other lines casually mumbled near the end of the song. Heck, I didn't even notice the line(s) before I read the lyrics here and turned up the volume with headphones on.
I think that this fact suggests that the protagonist is in denial.

Dinosaur Jr. – Not the Same Lyrics 11 years ago
Such a fantastic song; I love the obvious vulnerability of Mascis - his voice is all shaky. This song is Mascis cringing out his deepest disappointments to the one that he loves / has loved. He feels utterly let down. Sad, yet a reality for many; I for one can relate to this.

Modest Mouse – She Ionizes and Atomizes Lyrics 11 years ago
I think I've finally understood the meaning of "She Ionizes and Atomizes"
In chemistry, one atom can take the other atom's electron, giving the atoms a positive and a negative charge respectively. In transferred sense, this means that the girl takes his heart and then dissolves into atoms(she disappears from his life); these atoms turn into sunlight, representing love.
Of course, as others have mentioned, only flourescent light, and not real sunlight, shines upon her, meaning that she's not in love with him.
My take on it anyway :)

Modest Mouse – Whenever I Breathe Out, You Breathe In (Positive/Negative) Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm wondering why I've always thought about this song differently than most of the other interpretations that I've read here. Anyway, here goes.
The second and third paragraph is written in past tense and thus the protagonist looks back on a recent period of his life where he's suffered from some sort of depression, numbness, absence of feelings, whatever. The point is, that the first paragraph, written in present tense, represents his friends, colleagues, family, whatever, seeing the protagonist for the first time in a long time; for me, this shows that he's now over this negative part of his life and can now begin another positive part of it.
Notice my choice of words: This is not the first time that his life's been negative nor positive, thus the lines: "When you're living your life, well, that's the price you pay." + "I'm feeling this positive/negative, positive/negative."
The main point of the song is essentially that life, as well as anything else, goes up and down; it's positive/negative, and that's just how it is.

Modest Mouse – Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset Lyrics 12 years ago
This song's about Isaac's mind: He's a manic depressive, and characteristic for that disease is an extreme mood change (=>depression) from time to time.

"Talking shit about a pretty sunset
Blanketing opinions that I'll probably regret soon
Changed my mind so much I can't even trust it
My mind changed me so much I can't even trust myself"

He can't trust himself; in fact he doesn't even know who he is, because his mind changes (him) from time to time, thus he knows that he'll regret whatever he says when he's depressed (talking shit about a pretty sunset => criticizing everything)
