Lilly Wood & The Prick – Prayer in C Lyrics 6 years ago
I don't think it's coincidence that the lines start with "Yah", "See" (or 'C') and "Hey" (or 'A') as potentially shortened versions of Yahweh, Christ and... well, we'll get to that last one.

Note that the two "See" stanzas regard things that involve more direct interaction with humanity: "I'm not wasting no more time" - potentially regarding the eventual return of the Son, and "the children are starving and their houses were destroyed."

Consider this in contrast to the "Yah" stanzas regarding the absence of God's direct presence and the processes of aging and ending life. These speak more to grand design than direct intervention.

So then it would follow logically that "Hey", or "A" is a reference to Allah, but I'm not so sure. The "Hey" lines are "When seas will cover lands and when men will be no more" speak to the belief of some that the God of the Old Testament was vengeful, bringing floods and and fire and brimstone. Regardless of Jewish-Muslim relations, this song is way too smart to pin that on one denomination or faith.

Instead, I think the "Hey" or 'A' stands for Abba, the Aramaic word for Father-God and used in Jewish prayers. The more archaic usage and reference to God as a father, capable of both mercy and punishment, is much more consistent with the line in the song.

I was wondering how far I'd have to dig for someone to mention this. In the mp3 version I have, he clearly says "a mastiff hound", not "the mask I found".

To be honest, the "reflective stage / positive thinking" argument is what I thought when I first heard this song. I was 7.

Shed my skin = peeling off clothes/inhibitions

Dancin' in = I don't know how to explain this without getting graphic...

Why don't you call my name = "Say my name! Say my name, b!tch!"

Put your mind at rest = Given that the rest of the song can be construed as him trying to convince a woman why she should give it up, it should be obvious "she" could be nervous about doing so.

Testimony / No Doubt about it = Laying it out there for her to decide.

The song is about sex. Don't overthink it. All three verses are clearly referring to sexual acts or sexual parts, and others have explained it perfectly above. Even the video begins with swimming sperm, and the last fruit he eats is a cherry.

The one line the "drug" proponents point to as the start of their explanation is "I've kicked the habit." A habit is also a religious garb, typically worn by nuns, monks, and other religious orders. Kicking the habit is followed by shedding his skin. The combination of those two suggests throwing away his inhibitions and/or peeling off his clothes. It is a great play on words. Enjoy!
