I like rock n' roll up from the British Invasion to about the 90s. Tough to keep up after that since the music scene has changed and your priorities change. More freedom? Yup. More word of mouth? Yup. More work to keep up? Yup. More BS? Yup.

The Beatles – Baby You're a Rich Man Lyrics 4 years ago
I've heard John say several times he wanted to be rich. Is this his comeuppance to the rich Jews he knew?

@[Mercury1:32170] I mix up the words to this song like "Shadows on the walls meet my eyes" instead of the first line and maybe the first lines are the the cheese. Melted cheese. It could fit a more poetic song or something and then he moves into the hooks. Overall, he is liberal with his melted cheese and that makes it work. Otherwise, why do we sometimes end up hum/sing this song to ourselves?

The Animals – Sky Pilot Lyrics 4 years ago
This song is a great. I remember it being uplifting even though it about death and war. It is about a Sky Pilot or chaplain that has preach the word of God to men about to go into battle. It has the background sounds of air battle, but it could be any combat where one could die. Soldiers are about to go into battle for their country and may not return. Thus, the Sky Pilot gives them his blessings, encouragement, and prays that they return. However, many will not. All he can do is encourage them and tell them God is with them. However, this does not stop the people from experiencing the horrors of war. It's anti-war, surely. Thus, what does it mean? With war, we and the Sky Pilot never reach the sky or God. This is not what God meant for heaven and peace to be. It is the opposite and we have to live through the experience of sin and the fallen world.

Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight Lyrics 6 years ago
The line, "I would not lend a hand" struck a nerve. I would think he's imagining his former lover in trouble. Sure, it's angry and bitter but all to real. Past relationships and future relationships are/will not be perfect. Perhaps, the best way to break up via divorce is to mediate. It's one final compromise and it shows love, even if isn't there anymore, is still a two-way street. Both have to swallow their pride, ego and deep hurt. The last part is not in the song, but it's the opposite of what the lyrics mean.

Michael Jackson – I'll Be There Lyrics 6 years ago
To me this is a song from a loving father to his daughter stating that he'll love her, protect her and be there for her as she grows up. Growing up is not easy to do and a child needs their parents' firm hand to guide them as they develop as well as set standards for them to follow. Salvation in the second line takes on a religious and moral theme, as well as well as deliverance from danger or failure. Faith in the fifth line signifies his trust and belief in her as well as God the creator. The song tells of their relationship in conversation form as the years pass and she develops from infant, to toddler, to young girl, to her teenage years and finally an adult. It's a touching song professing a parent's love for their child.

@[BiPolarBer:16447] I don't think the lyrics were intended to have meaning, but I've never used heroin. It does reflected a tormented soul. Most of Cobain's lyrics do. Perhaps it's subconscious the way it was put from pen to paper.

Madonna – Papa Don't Preach Lyrics 9 years ago
One of my favorite Madonna songs from the 80s and I think it's one of Madonna's, too. This is what I get from going to her concert. I didn't get to ask her. I think she cut her hair trying to look like a high schooler which she doesn't exactly pull off but it's fine. Tough to lop off practically half your age. The contrast in her video with the sexy temptress and Marilyn image makes it interesting. I recently revisited this song because someone said this was a sad song as her boy friend leaves her. But she's determined to keep her baby regardless (which is a conservative message!). I didn't get that at all from the lyrics.

Beck – Loser Lyrics 11 years ago
I think he's talking to the different drugs he's on -- crack, heroin, coke, or other. It's a collection random thoughts when he was down and on these drugs.

Soy un perdedor

I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me?

I first thought it was a brothel, but it could be a gambling den or prison. Whatever. It is a bad boy song and why it is cool.

LOL. Nope. The tune is way off for a cocaine song. See "Cocaine" by Eric Clapton or "If You Want Me To Stay" by Sly and the Family Stone.

Thanks for this. I think one of the things about the time (60s & 70s) was there were these meanings one had to find.

Bob Dylan – Knockin' on Heaven's Door Lyrics 12 years ago
I first thought it was a Western song, and he's talking to his loved one. It does have a tone of dying or near death. It's... Simple. Heartful. Soulful. It could be about a soldier or cop, so I think there is more than one interpretation.

You definitely put a different twist on this. I like it. He asphyxiated her as "no more will my green seagull turn a shade of blue." I'm going to drink some coffee now -- straight up black.

The Rolling Stones – Wild Horses Lyrics 12 years ago
I think there is the mood where death is near, and the writer is at bedside next to a girl. He thinks there isn't much time left and looks back at their relationship. He realizes she has treated him badly, but he isn't bitter about it and wants them to last even after death. I like watching this song clip from the "Gimme Shelter" film. In it, the Stones aren't performing the song, but listening to it being played back. They become quiet and reflective and seem to enjoy it afterward. Mick even claps, and it probably is one of his best vocals on a song.
