David Bowie – Life on Mars? Lyrics 12 years ago
Good post, noodlepop. I take 'wonder if he'll ever know / he's in the best selling show' to mean "reality" as protrayed in the media especially the news.

I think David is basically calling the news a soapopera, an endlessly serialized story with multiple story lines that keeps the audience coming back to see the next episode. (But not acting on or doing anything to improve live on earth)

Working Class Hero is a "proletariat-anthem"?

You're just f*****g peasants as far as I can see.

"It's a god awful small affair" doesn't mean an "affair" happened. I take it to mean that her parents are having a fight sparked by some stupid trigger, but based in dysfunctional relations between the sexes. Her mom is upset about something and her dad tells her to leave so they can sort it out (probably poorly) in privacy.

That is the opening image of societal dysfunction (family level) based on people behaving like they think they are supposed to, but which just perpetuate the dysfunction.

She goes to the movie to escape, but the movie is serving up the same sex role cliches she sees everywhere ("sailors fighting in the dance hall').

"Lawmen beating up the wrong guy." Dysfunction @ society level. You know, cops come on to the scene and don't know what's going down, so as the perps escape or look on, they grap whoever is convienent, likely the person trying to stop the fight, and start beating on them.

"The best selling show" reality as protrayed in the news media. Which is a re-casting of what really happened into the standard cliches to fit the story they want to tell, instead of anything close to what is really happening.

To the girl, it looks like escaping the self feeding loop of people acting like cliches and being protrayed in cliches is hopelessly futile. Is there something else completely different and hopefully better? Is there life on Mars?
