Vetiver – Been So Long Lyrics | 8 years ago |
The lyrics with a few slight corrections [well done, though!]: I can't believe that you're knocking Knocking on my door Oh it's been so long, been so long, oh Fate has a way of showing I'm where you belong Oh it's been so long, been so long, oh I can't believe that you're knocking Knocking on my door Oh it's been so long, been so long, oh Fate has a way of showing I'm where you belong Oh it's been so long, been so long, oh The sound of my heart stopping in surprise and song It's been so long, been so long, oh Time has a way of knowing what we have is strong Oh it's been so long, been so long, oh.... |
Snow Patrol – The Lightning Strike Lyrics | 9 years ago |
I think it is about love. Maybe not romantic love. I think it is about losing a love and then finding new one and realizing how precious and fragile its existence is. Potential lost moments. A bit of panic. Moments to be seized and then the relaxation of realizing that you live in each other's hearts despite uphill battles. From "be the lightning in me that strikes relentless" to "something was bound to go right sometime today." Wake me up and always remind me how to create the future. |
Chet Faker – I'm Into You Lyrics | 9 years ago |
I have to agree, with a slight change. I hear: "I know you don't want A love you can't sing" To me that dovetails with the opening line of "I gotta feeling we are gonna win" since he finishes the stanza with "the music was there at the start." To my mind, he's saying that he understands that she can only truly love if certain elements are present. She doesn't want a love that she can't sing [a poetic interpretation of being able to immerse and express bliss and flow], but in their case the music [a poetic interpretation for a specific kind of spark and connection] was there from the start and has only continued to build. This is why he has a feeling that they are going to win. Just a thought! |
Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics | 10 years ago |
As someone who was recently discharged from the ICU and finally figured out how serious my situation was [I have epilepsy, am recovering from TBI, and had other complicating factors] because the doctors and nurses were asking about DNRs, next of kin, religious preferences. They weren't sure I would make it. Clearly, I have. However, my family is hundreds of miles away and my significant other is thousands of miles away, unable to secure a swift flight to be with me. It was for the best, though, I was a mess. I was hooked up to so many machines. At one point, I was hooked up to 8 different kinds of monitors and had 12 IV bags pumping into me as well as a vitals monitor connected to my finger and the stench of death and piss and 409 is truly unbearable. It clings to everything. That said, being borderline, the ICU staff made some exceptions and skirted some rules in order let me have my cell phone so I could text my guy and family with updates and checkpoints. In those moments, "who is going to watch you die" becomes very, very real. I could have died. It could have been a nurse or it could have been on a phone skype with my love. The doctors and nurses were surprised [and pleased] that I didn't die, but I remain stubborn that way. In one sense, I don't want anyone to watch me die, but I respect the love of the people willing to stay with me as I make my passage because actively engaging loss is a passage within itself and statement to the investment that you have to a person and your relationship with them. I'm glad for not dying, but I even more glad for knowing that there are those who would / will be present when it happens. Sooooo, yeah, what Sarah said. |
The National – Fake Empire Lyrics | 10 years ago |
What's funny to me, is that I find the song neither disillusioned or apathetic. I find it filled a quiet yearning and nostalgia, padded by the magic space where just as you fall asleep, after having a gentle evening of simple pleasures, you let go of trying to solve all the problems that you face, yet still know that this momentary space that you've constructed is one that will swiftly fade. And the trumpets are a reminder, almost an anticipatory call to arms, that reality will come rushing in very soon. |

Iron & Wine – Biting Your Tail Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Ok, so below are the lyrics: may your eyes be wide and seeing may you learn from the view where you're kneeling know the fear of the world that you're feeling is the fear of a slave may you know how the fight was started and want as much from the snake as the garden and wear them both like a glove that you can wave may your mouth betray your wisdom may you get what they fail to mention may your love be your only religion and preach it to us all may you lose what you offer gladly and may you worship the time and its passing the stars won't ever wait for you to watch them fall we're the smoke on a burned horizon we're the boat on a tide that's rising both the post and the pig you're untying the butcher gone for the blade someday we may all be happy someday all make a face worth slapping someday we may be shocked to be laughing at the way we behave may your hands be strong and willing and may you know when to speak and to listen may you find every friend that you're missing is no check in the mail may you end at bruised and purple and know that peace is the shape of a circle ‘cuz round and round you’ll go biting your tail we're the children the wind is whipping the short hands on the clock still ticking both the egg and the red fox grinning his belly full for the day someday we may all want nothing and all forget we'll get what’s coming someday all say the world was something that we just couldn’t change may your tongue be something wicked and know your part in the calf and the killing and see straight through the captain you're kissing the helm lose in his hands may your words be well worth stealing and put your hand on your heart when you’re singing the choir’s sick of the song but they still gotta stand |

My take on the song is that it's a benediction encouraging the listener to accept that we walk through this world being both the bruiser and the bruised and that this is ok, that powerful lessons can be learned if we're willing to understand and embrace this dichotomy. |
